So, I'm looking for a basic TV, and I don't know where to start

saras
Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

It actually is the cheapest from those manufacturers, >=40 inch, 1080p one in the store.

Well that was rather easier than anticipated.

Then go for it ;)

I want to buy my mother a new a TV as a present, as she's still using an ancient SD one and I don't really know from where to start.

The TV is going to be used basically exclusively for Downtown Abbey and the News. The TV alcove can't fit anything larger than a ~42 inch one, let'say 40 inch to be on the safe side. So I suppose the only real thing I care about is picture quality at this point. I'd also like to stick to bellow 600 eur (about 550 usd when adjusted for taxes in American) for it, if that's possible? I don't actually know how much tvs go for, as I don't actually have one myself.

How do I go about picking one out?

Smart TV or not? If so, I would recommend something Samsung.

Choose a 1080p 40-42" LED or LCD tv from sony, samsung, or sharp. That's about it :)

Pretty much any TV nowadays that's 1080p will do, so just get something like this

That's not actually an option for me. I live in the middle of fucking nowhere, I will have to get whatever I want shipped.

Really, that's it?

Not. It can be smart, but there's absolutely no benefit from it being so.

Brand name isn't really an issue either, look at above post

Really, that's it?

Yeah that's just the most important stuff.

Things like bezel size, refresh rate, smart or not, those are just 'do I want it or not?' kind of stuff that doesn't really change the experience at all.

So go on the website of the retailer you want to buy from, and jsut narrow down the search results to LED/LCD, 1080p, and sony/samsung/sharp, and you're guaranteed to get a nice tv.

Surprisingly enough, is. Cause I can't find Insignias anywhere near me.

So, there's a sale on a Samsung UE40H5500AWXXH close by enough. Should I just pick that?

If it's the cheapest thing around then sure, but there's probably something cheaper that's not a Smart TV tho
