Problem with ROG Swift PG278Q

I very recently built a new rig, and capped it off with shiny new monitor, but it seems I have got myself a dud.

I've made a few (poor quality) videos to try and show the issue.

In the video above, you can see a dark flickering trailing behind the window as I drag it accross the screen.

In the video above, you can see how the test area turns green as I scroll it up to the top of the screen.

You can also see this area changing colour as I drag a window accross it.

In the video above, you can see some of the images along the top of the web page flickering, and you can also the the large main test area flickering between gery and green.

In the video above, I am trying to show how dark the screen goes when I turn on ULMB.

This is dificult to convay using my phones camera, as the banding you can see in the video cannot be seen with the naked eye, but the darker stripes are pretty much how dark the whole screen goes.

As you can see, I only have the brightness set to 79 with ULMB turned off, and set to 100 with it turned on.

Also with it turned on, I can't really see any flicker, but I can feel it, if that makes sense. Feels really strange.

The site used in some of the videos is http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/clock_phase.php#clockcalib

I would be very greatful if other owners of the PG278Q could confirm that I am the only one with this issue, and possibly even create a quick video for comparison.

Thanks :)

Does this problem happen on other monitors, or are you absolutely certain that the problem is your monitor and not say your GPU driver?

I genuinely do not see the issue

Sorry, I should have explaind more.

1. There is ghosting along the trailing edge of the window, as I drag it along the screen.

2. When viewing http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/clock_phase.php#clockcalib there is lots of flicker on some of the images, and the big test area turns green when it is scrolled up to the top half of the screen

3. ULMB makes the screen much darker than I would expect, and feels strange.

The effect of all these issues is much stronger in person, but I beleive they are still quite visable in the videos.

Edit: I have now updated the OP with more info, and fixed tons of typos

Nope, it doesn't happen on my old monitor, or my TV

MSI GTX 970,

Yep, they are up to date.

Pretty surprised that the responses are not more along the lines of.... "Dude, that's ####ed".

I have been called away unexpectedly, so I won't be able to respond to this thread as soon as I would have liked, but thank you for the replies so far.

So... No ROG Swift owners here that I can compare notes with?

Well you are looking at calibration images, so if you don't have these problems in normal conditions (eg. gaming / Work) I wouldn't care to much.
If you do, then send the monitor back to the store.

I don't have you're monitor so can't compare.

Ghosting in the first video... Thats like looking at a 60Hz monitor. Not a 144hz. Unless there is an option that it downclocks. Does it have Gsync?

Various visual anomalies happen during regular dasktop use, but are harder to spot, and much harder to capture on video, but regardless, I just spent £635 on this screen, so I care quite a lot.

I am on the verge of sending it back for a replacment, but I was really hoping that I could find some others who have had any experiance with this monitor, so that I can get 100% conformation that there is something unusual happening with mine.

The artifacts happen at all refresh rates, 60, 120, 144.

Yes, it has g-sync.

For the first one, 144 hz is unfortunately not a magic bullet that makes motion blur go away. That's not that bad and probably normal for the display.

For number two I'm afraid I don't really understand what would cause the test window to turn green but it's. Dry unlikely to be a monitor issue.

For number three ulmb mode makes the screen MUCH darker. That's part of how the tech works. They backlight is literally off a lot of the time

Fix that typo Linus. ;)

I would start messing around with your GPU drivers and see if you can get anywhere with that.

Yay! Finally, an answer from and actual owner (though I suppose there are not that many of us right now), and from the man himself :)

You say it's not that bad, but honestly, it's worse in person, and does not happen with my old Dell 2007WFP 20.1" or my TV, LG 47LM670T

ULMB is actually the worst mode, with it leaving a bright white/neon blue halo, trailing behind moving icons and text. That, along with my seemingly sensitive nature towards backlight flicker, makes it a pretty bad experience.

I would start messing around with your GPU drivers and see if you can get anywhere with that.

Due to my other screens being fine, I'm ruling out the gfx card and/or drivers for now, and Linus seems pretty sure that it's not the monitor itself (that was supposed to say "Very unlikely to be a monitor issue", right?), I have decided to blame

the DisplayPort cable for now. So... The new cable should be arriving tomorrow :)

This Amazon review of a cable also went a long way to convincing me... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B007PKPUIK

Excellent quality shielded cable with good quality ends.

It is one of the few shielded quality cables I managed to find that was displayport certified.

I had serious problems with picture quality and flickering on the screen from the previous cheap non certified cables.

Since this has been fitted the picture on my G-Sync monitor is clearer, crisper and best of all no more flickering or artifacts.

I would highly recommend this cable to anyone who has a G-SYNC monitor, and it is available in shorter lengths as well.

I know it's not cheap, but I don't want to take any chances at this point, as I'm on a fault finding mission.

  • 3 months later...

So I finally got my replacment today, after waiting 28 working days :/

Horizontal ghosting (which was the worst problem) is totally gone :D

Vertical Ghosting at 120Hz (it's the same at 144Hz) :(

Behaviour shown in video #2 and #3 remains. (#4 is normal)

New video filmed at 120fps with an Xperia Z2

Edited to 20% playback speed with Adobe Premiere Pro

In person, the ghosting looks a lot smaller and sharper, and looks like alternate vertical columns of pixels are ghosting, like this... |I|I|I|I|I|I|I|I|I|I|I|
