LG Curved 34UC97 - 87 Current News, Reviews and prices

prochaos

Ive been looking into this monitor as a replacement for 3 Dell u2414h monitors since i first saw what little news was released on it.

Just to Clarify there are 3 different versions of this monitor,

34UC97-S

34UC87-B black

34UC87-S gold

the only difference between the 97 and the 87 is that the 87 has a complete black back and stand, the stand can go up and down and it has a vesa mount compatability, which is puts it ahead of the 97 however it is referred to as the business version and seems to be only available in Austria and Germany, there doesnt seem to be any difference between the 87-s and the 87-b, at least not at the moment.

Here are several links that will interested those that want further information on the new LG curved monitors, theres very little info out atm and linus video review seems to be the only indepth review out atm apart from the 3 reviews from the German amazon page for the 97, linked below.

http://hardforum.com...=1834533&page=2

An early forum post about the 97 which indicates and shows some backlight bleeding, more discussions as well on the monitor

Video of the 97, 1:58 you can see some backlight bleed, however someone stated they had a similar issue with the 34um95 and the bezel was too tight so he loosened the bezel what he thought was backlight bleed was gone, so we will have to see.

http://hardforum.com...d.php?t=1837058

A recent forum post and official thread on the 97 on hardforum, a user recently got a hold of a 97 and should be giving his/her views on it soon, some images as well

Some software that may aid in fixing some ultrawide etc problems, i havnt used it yet, look into it yourself

Offical forum for widescreen gaming, plenty of info on compatible games, discussions. Response to posts can be slow but you might find some valuable info there.

http://www.overclock...d=17&catid=1120

The overclockeruk page for the 97 and currently 1 of 2 retailers with it available in the UK, recent forums posts inidicate it will be available on overclockers in early Novemeber but that only an estimate.

http://www.amazon.co...keywords=34uc97

Amazon page for the 97, 3 german retailers have it available for delivery to the UK but at very high prices.

http://www.bhphotovi...ips_curved.html

US retailer with the 97 available for purchase at only $1299, the user from hard forum post purchased it from here, just to give you an idea $1300 is only £813, so it is the cheapest currently.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/

I recently ask them if they would review the 97 or 87 and the responded with "Yes, we are hoping to review one of them at some point when samples become available to us" a review from tftcentral will ultimately be what most people are looking for, more questions than answer at the moment.

Linus's review and the only current video review on the 34UC97, its been 3 weeks since the review and very little has followed from anyone else.

Awesome post, I have a Dell 21:9 monitor and if anyone is on the fence with the LG monitor just buy it. Once you get a 21:9 monitor you really cant go back to 16:9 without feeling like you are missing something. Almost everything works in 21:9 now and for anything that doesn't you still basically have a 27" 1440p 16:9 monitor.

I know I posted this before but here is a comparison I made of 21:9 resolutions compared with 16:9 ones in case anyone is interested:

Shipping to Europe is pretty expensive since you have to pay taxes and what not. 1200$ + 610$ to Belgium...

I been thinking about this monitor.

The way i see it atm if you want good monitor then you have 3 choices, 34UC97, Rog Swift, or Acers 4k Gsync.

Tho i still cant decide :(

Lack of Gsync on this one is saad.

When i returned my 3 Dell u2414h monitors i looked in the market, and started to look at 4k monitors only, thinking i was certain that i was going to buy a 4k, but like so many people have stated 4k is only a child at the moment, it needs time to grow, there are too many issues with it and ultimately i see myself returning it after a couple weeks. Personally if i had Nvidia cards i wouldn't be going through all this i would of bought a Rog Swift instantly, but my choice to buy AMD cards for the extra vram for eyefinity back lashed and now i either spend more money and change cards of be patient and wait and see what free sync has to offer, until then there really isnt much choice. test 3 more ips panels or jump in the boat like many others and test the awesomeness that is 21:9, at this moment in time the LGUC87 is the best of the best. Just need to wait and see what Dell pulls out their bag with their curved 21:9.

Here's a question I have. We can have 1440p and 4k laptops. We can have 1440p smartphones. We can only have 27+ inch displays for PCs.

Why the hell has no one made a 24 inch 1440p display. That's something I see as an issue with anything past 1080p right now, is that you can get it in small screens and big screens, nothing a little more "reasonable" (Fingerquotes because the definition varies person to person)

I think it mostly goes down to what is your preferred "pitch"

How close do you sit in front of your monitor ? Is it your primary ?

I sit at about 50cm (-2ft) from my screen and I feel like I don't see the pixels, or at least its not to a point where I'm ready to spend more to make it better right now.

Obviously if size is a problem, then it makes sense to go down in inch.

"How would you use your computer display ?" is the question here.

Actually no : "How do people use their computer display most of the time ?"

I received the screen !

It goooaaaargeous...

There is a few things I'm not absolutely fond of though, the plastic is very squeaky and the back-light is not very well flushed with the IPS panel, It creates a weird parallax at the very edges of the screen. I'll show you what I mean later. Also I noticed some vertical color shifting. Once in game, it's fine. And it's visible at angles that won't affect daily use.

The stand feels like heavy cold durable metal hardware.  I even hesitated to use my ergotron... Just kidding... But it felt great as a kit stand  :D

The "feel" is awesome. it seems like its the perfect shape for filling your field of view in a natural way. A more "abrupt" curve would have bent the image too much I think.

Sound is... bad. But I wasn't expecting dolby certification on this. It's great still because its practical. When you need it you can playback some sound on it.

I will post pics tonight

Cheers

Yes please do post some pics bud, some in game, some of the stand, some using this forum perhaps with the screen split into 3 or 4 screens which ever feels most comfortable and most importantly post as many picks as possible at different angels of a black background, not off or on stand by but in game with a black background or a black wallpaper so we can see what the backlight bleeding is like.

Look realy forward to these photos.

Hey dude, sorry for the late post I had a very busy week building my desk and working...

Here are some pics and a couple of videos to illustrate some of the issues

http://youtu.be/kRcaAMbgP2Q

http://youtu.be/3MV4ssRxn4E

As you may notice from the pictures, from a comfortable sitting distance, the parallax effect is barely noticeable.

There is a noticeable dark ramp from the bottom up.

I have the non-curved model and I still prefer it over the curved for one reason: It has more input ..

I've got my PC on DP, my PS4 on HDMI and still I have one HDMI for future.
