Razer Nabu release date set

darwin006

Razer has finally set a release date of October 31st for its "smart band" the Nabu. It seems that it is a little controversial in the LTT community (at least from the threads that I have seen) as most seem to think it doesn't provide enough functionality and doesn't provide enough info on the screen. And Linus as has said that he thinks is dumb. I on the other hand think it could be just perfect for me but I do have my apprehension and look forward to the release and I hope that Linus might give it a try and make a video.

The Nabu is wrist band with a 128 X 32 OLED display, BlueTooth 4.0 LE, it will work with both iOS 5+ and Android 4.3+ devices, it will be "splash proof", Razer is claiming a battery life of 5 to 7 days, and rumored to be less then $100 USD. The Nabu will monitor all the usual fitness things that fitness bands do but also allow you to see who has sent you a call, text, email, google maps, and social media notifications. Oh and the Nabu is open source so people can develop apps for it.

Meh, they took too long. Just like pretty much everything they showed off at CES and most of it is still not available in their store. I would have totally bought that iphone controller case but they took too fucking long. I haven't checked in a couple weeks but last time I did, Razer had more products that were unavailable than they did for sale and ready for purchase. That's just sad.

Wait, isn't that the only thing every smartwatch does?

Wait, isn't that the only thing every smartwatch does?

Well for example the Apple watch and the Samsung gear watches can do voice dialing, show images and videos, control your camera, show maps, control music etc etc etc all on a nice clear colour display

the nabu has some of this functionality , but very limited

It does some health tracking stuff. I'm not sure how well it's going to work out for them, but I'll probably buy one to play with it. I like Razer as a company but I don't know about this product.

I have no idea why Razer is doing this? I think they should release nez gaming product instead of smart band or new skin for their already know product

Do you really want to talk in to your wrist to someone? why do you want to show someone a image or video on the ~1" by 1" screen and not your 4" to 6" screen on your smart phone? (I dont get why anyone would want to do that) I would think the map thing would be too small but maybe people would like and use that. Music control is functionality that the Nabu could use if someone cant find a good way to do it with just the one button cause the Nabu is open source but maybe that will have to wait till the Nabu 2.

No but for example maybe I am in the car, or somewhere accessing my phone is difficult, maybe I am in the gym and my watch is tracking my health but my mum calls, or my friend, I can answer my call or send a quick text back without retreiving my phone from my coat, the maps idea is great, if you are navigating a new city or location just to have it when walking around without holding your phone for theives. Music control is great, being able to not just skip track, but select an artist or album, plus the million of other things it will do, like remote control my iPhone camera, or start and stop a go pro,  you can even use it to advance slides when air playing a presentation from your phone!

Doesn't my phone do the same thing?

Then obviously a smart watch is not for you

The idea is, like now, I am sat at work, if somebody messages me, I can quickly check a message, or send an instant reply, maybe I have some headphones in walking down the street, I can easily change track, or check my location on the map if lost in the city, without waking around with my £800 iPhone easily stealable

It will also track my health and fitness, and allow me to do all sorts of cool things

Smart watches are a 100% luxury device, they are not a necessity, I always wear a watch.... so it would be nice if it could do some extra functions for me

I see. They're still pushing that green awfully hard though. It's in most of the images. They should have gone for the whole spread so it's more obvious, or just the plain black.

The main problem I see with this is size, wrists are all different sizes. Are they planning on offering more than one?

"Splashproof" is a bit of an issue. For something they push as an activity bracelet I'd expect at least some form of IP certification.

They are no match against other smart watches. A lot cheaper though.

Actually with the recent price drop of the pebble smart watchs to $99 USD it might now end up being over priced for what is can do if it coming in close to $100.

green is their main colour I mean you're practically asking them to change their whole company logo and theme. I get there's personal preference but they give you an option for this even if the focus is on the green one

Yes it will be much cheaper then those smart watches, but most tech reviewers seem to recommend the pebble over those at the moment anyway so... And of course we will have to wait a few more months for apples watch to see if they can innovate further on the smart watch.

EDIT I have up dated the OP to show the image of the different color bands ;) lol

Nice to see it get a release date but I'm still on the fence about it. Having the display face down seems strange to me. Good that it's competitively priced though.

Take it with a grain of salt with regards to final consumer pricing but from their website:

"Once qualified, you can purchase a Nabu Developer Edition unit at $49.99USD"

Why would anyone buy it. Seems like Razer is trying to jump into the fashion accessories trend rather than the good smartwatch industry.

The music control might be based on gestures

It's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature!
