Gigabyte GTX 780 VS ASUS Strix GTX 970

I have been planning to do my first build for months and choosing all the parts that could give me the best price to performance and last a long time. I'm stuck in between buying a GTX 780 or a GTX 970. I've seen benchmarks using the games I would most likely be playing but there were ones that showed the 970 doing better than the 780 and vice versa.

I've looked over the specs for both cards and I don't know what to do. The 970 has a higher core and boost clock but less Cuda cores, a smaller memory interface but larger memory size, faster memory speed, and a lower power overhead than the 780. I haven't decided if I will overclock either of the cards but later down the line I most likely will. It is just hard for me to choose for some reason and I would love to hear some opinions.

you won't find a benchmark of a quality test where the 780 outperformes the 970.

If you don't mind the 1GB less of VRAM, higher TDP and missing out on the new features of the 900 series card the GTX 780 is still a good GPU especially if you can get one at a discount.

At this point, performance for GTX 780s have already matured, meaning it isn't likely that there will be a significant improvement in performance from driver releases. It's not impossible though, just unlikely.

The GTX 970 however is still new, there may be some follow-up performance increase from drivers, but who knows how far these performance additions really go.

We won't know if it'll clearly match or even beat a GTX 780 in the near future but the new features that come with the GTX 970 is definitely worth a look at, especially in upcoming UE games.

 

The GTX 780 is still a good card overall, but we shouldn't judge the GTX 970 just yet with it being new and all. The pros of course are lesser TDP which means less heat and less bills to pay, and new tech from the GTX 900s.

In this case we should see how well the GTX 780 hold ups against the GTX 970 on upcoming UE games.

You do realize Linus actually has a video reviewing the 970 Strix right (url below)? I'm not gonna summarize the whole thing, but the 970 is essentially equivalent to the 780, plus or minus a few FPS. Keep in mind the 970 is still new tech, and is likely to improve with upcoming updates, etc.

Yes, I already knew that. I actually watched that and other reviews long before I posted this. The big problem is that it is decently hard to find this card in stock.
