Xbox One Advice: Resolution

XGwolf36
I am considering buying a new Peasant Box (unenthusiastically).

"Why?", you might ask? Halo.

I am also going to buy a new TV , because the CRT TV I use with the X360 is awful.

To cut down cost, I am considering getting a 720p TV (with a low display lag).

I understand that the XONE upscales 720p to 1080p.

I am wondering;

1) With the 720p TV connected, will the XONE not upscale and run in native 720p?

 -----------will 1080p be avoided completely?

2) Will all the games run in native 720p?

3) Are there any advantages to running pure 720p?

3a) Could there be a smaller input lag because the upscaling process never happens?

----------------(I doubt it)

3b) Could there be a higher frame rate? (I doubt it, because I think games lock their frame rate on console?)

3c) Reduced heat or electricity usage? (I don't even care, just wondering)

4) I live in Australia so the TV standard is PAL rather than NTSC

-----I don't know if this is relevant at all

5) Wondering if I should favour LCD or LED ? (little difference)

On a side note:

I recently tried using a 1080p computer monitor for the X360, and it looked great and I didn't notice any lag.

In the X360 settings, it said it was outputting 1080p (HA! that is so cute!)

About that, is the X360 upscaling to 1080p like the XONE, or just

showing a 720p image on the 1080p screen?

Anyway

Thanks for helping a noob.

LED TVs are LCD TV's with LED backlight.

I don't think you can get a LCD without LED anymore.

1) What? It runs 720p native on a 720p screen.

2) Yes

3) No

a) Varies by tv, usually no

b) no

c) Technically yes, you aren't using the electricity for upscaling (actually stretching) on the TV

4) Nope

5) LED?

It's just showing a 720p image on the screen.

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. Not really, since most games are natively 720p anyways

3a. No

3b. No, games are designed to run at a capped frame rate which will be the same at 720p or (in games that support it) 1080p

3c. Very slightly, you won't notice it

4. Irrelevant

5. LED. The panels are a lot thinner, TV itself is a lot lighter, no fear of CRT backlight burning out, are more power efficient, and get a lot less hot

Welcome to the forum btw :)

If you're a Halo fan, it is absolutely worth it, though, admittedly, barely. Halo 1, 2, 3 and 4 with all campaigns and, nearly priceless to any Halo fan, Halo 1 and 2 online matchmaking, both as they appear and play as the originals. And that doesn't even include Halo 5 AND 6 (if this bullshit "10 year console" pans out like Microsoft hopes).

Anyway, if you run your Xbox at 720 on a 720 screen, it'll run at 720 with no sort of input lag.

Microsoft proudly presents you: Next gen!!! Where all your dreams come true, you'll be playing in 792p and 30fps and you better buy that damn kinect. Welcome to the future, where 720p is a thing in the past. Enjoy your 792p for 8 more years :)

-I understand how good gaming PCs are

-I understand how bad the Xbox One is

-I'm not usually one to jump on bandwagons

I have considered getting a gaming PC, but:

-I am a casual gamer

-I don't want to spend much money on gaming

-I recently got a $2000 ultrabook for University which can't run games well

-I don't know enough to build a gaming PC

-I don't have desk space for a gaming PC

-I prefer a controller to a keyboard and mouse

-I grew up playing Halo so I want to continue with that series even though I know it's just average compared to other games

-I will play plenty of other games

-I think 720p @ 50fps is good enough for me coming from 30fps on a CRT tv   (50Hz power in Australia)

But I'm still not sure if I'm even going to get it.

Theres nothing wrong with buying a console, even if it is an Xbox. I would suggest a 1080p TV though, fact is 720p is an old format and while a lot of television content is still broadcast in 720p you got to remember your upgrading from a CRT here, with that in mind how long do you plan to keep this new TV? in the UK at least its hard to find a decent size 720p TV at a worthwhile price, 1080p is as cheap as chips nowadays and as long as 4K continues to go nowhere fast provides a good bit of futureproofing.
