How strong a fan I need for Corsair CX 400W cooling?

191x7

I need a new fan for my CX400 PSU. I need it to be able to start around 4V but I don't know how much CFM or m^3/s or even RPM I need. Don't want it too loud, but would want it cool. The original ADDA did its all, the baring is done.

Any? You sure? I don't think so. If I put a fan that starts at 7V (like a Xilence Red Wing with hydro baring) it will not cool the PSU until it gets really hot (because the CX ramps the fan from arround 3.5V to 12V depending on the PSU load).

Try looking into the Scythe Grand flex it has a low starting voltage of around 4V, just a side note you will need to convert the 3 pin into the 2 pin headers inside the PSU, and of course be cautious when opening a PSU letting it sit for a good 30-60mins to discharge and not to touch the leads on the capacitors.

Here's another PSU fan mod that is very similar:

  • 3 weeks later...

Would a 44 CFM fan do?

I can't get a good fan that starts at lower than 6-7V without paying allmost a half of a new and decent power supply (like for example a CX430) so I will just buy a Xilence RedWing 120MM 1300+-10% Fluid Hydro Baring fan and attach it to a molex IF it is enough to cool the PSU unit.

It should perform well as long as it is a decently pressure optimized fan, and yes you can alway use the motherboard's fan control or directly wire it to moles to control the speed to the fan which will eliminate any worry of it not starting at a lower voltage or heating up.
