[Students only, World?] - Free development package from GitHub and partners

Hey coders, so found this pretty sweet development package put together by GitHub and partners. Unfortunately this is for students only, and you will need to provide you school email address as validation.

The package contains a GitHub micro account for free which gives you 5 private repositories, 100$ worth of free cloud hosting from Digital Ocean, Unreal Engine 4 and much much more.

Come check it out @ https://education.github.com/pack hopefully some of you can benefit from this sweet deal.

Happy Coding!!!!!

It should work just fine, as long as your email has @school or something then all is good. I got an email within 10mins.

I uploaded my Student ID instead and it got rid of the e-mail option... When I try to sign up again it says my GitHub account already has 1 pending so I hope it works out :3

PS: I don't have a school e-mail.

Never too late to start learning :)

I've tried learning multiple times before, no matter how much I try I just don't seem to catch on...

Perhaps I just need to take an actual programming class...

Sometimes it takes multiple tries. I hopped around from Java to HTML to Python over the last couple years but couldn't stick with one until about a month ago when I found C# which I have been understanding pretty well :D

I've tried:

- Java

- HTML

- Python

- Javascript

- CSS

And I think a few others though I'm forgetting what they are.

(HTML, JS, and CSS were all at the same time)

Yeah I would say it most definitively takes some time getting used to. You also have to find what you truly enjoy. For some it might be C#, other it might be anything to do with web development. You can't like all coding languages. Taking a class might help as well or even just learning with a group of friends can go a long way.

You could maybe try some Ruby? It seems like you've tried most of the languages i'd recommend. Ruby is a very simple and clean language, which might make it easier to learn for some people. No need for semicolons or brackets.

But I do agree that coding is not for everyone. I've tried to teach 3 people about coding, and none of them had the mind nor the patience for it. However I'm happy to see that you gave it a good go!

I'll look into it tomorrow, but right now I'm about to pass out from how tired I am. (I've been up for about 18 hours now...)

Any advice or recommended book for a newbie?

Hard to tell. The University that I currently attend teaches us Java as our first programming language. The reason being is that it covers most programming concepts that you can use in other languages, such as classes, methods, object oriented programming, threads, etc... Now that being said you could also start with something like C++ or C# as they would offer a good stepping stone as well. It's entirely up to you. I have relatively no experience with any of the C based languages so I can't say much more than that about them.

I would personally recommend Java to start, It's given me a good base to learn many other languages with ease such as Ruby, php, html, css and Python. If you are a visual learned you might want to take a look @ The New Boston on Youtube, he has plenty of Java videos and from what I can see there's a beginner playlist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl-zzrqQoSE&list=PLFE2CE09D83EE3E28

And an intermediate playlist if you choose to continue with it. If your someone who prefers learning through reading I'm sure there are quite a few good books out there however I'm quite uncomfortable recommending anything as I have never learned programming through a book. Maybe someone else can recommend something? If not here maybe in the coding section.

When it comes to coding, there's no better way to learn than by getting your hands dirty with some code. Practice is the best way you can learn how to code hands down. Here's a neat little site where you can quickly get a feel for what Java is all about and see if you want to proceed further. http://www.learnjavaonline.org/

Hope this helps.

I think the reason I go mine so quick was because I am using my School Email

Because he had a hard drive.
