How is the Canon SL1?

Sl1 is a bit overpriced, mainly on reason that it was made for the female clientele, which is why it's smaller.

Define starting camera?

"M. Aronnax." replied the Canadian, "your arguments are rotten at the foundation. You speak in the future, 'We shall be there! we shall be here!' I speak in the present, 'We are here, and we must profit by it.'"

a good starting camera would be a Nikon D5100 or a D3100/D3200/D3300.

to change the focus on nikon here :P

I do say a canon 1200D, i have it myself too, the fact that you are able to automate everything or just certain settings(and the other adjust) allowes for playing around with settings, without having to worry about the others being screwed over, the fact the the standrd included lens has image stabilization incrases the ease of use.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

I would say a Canon EOS 550D if you can find one cheap. Or the newer 600D if you can't. They are mid-level, and I've used it for my own amateur photography and videography as well as lent it to professionals who have filmed commercials and taken amazing shots with it.

I personally have the SL1 and I have liked it thus far. The smaller size is kinda nice when shooting events or on the go travel while still retaining solid image quality and battery life. Another recommendation would be the T3i. My girlfriend has it and she's gotten some really good shots with it and likes the flip out screen. It's also a standard sized DSLR so better for larger hands.

I'm a Nikon person but the d3300 has already been recommended.

Canon makes nice cameras too. The t3i is a good starter DSLR.

I would not get a D3100. The newer the camera, the better, no matter the brand. the 1200D is okay, but most nikons outperform it in Image quality.

Although the 1200D is decent for video. If you like mirrorless, there is also the a5000 which is also pretty good. If you want pocket-size, there is the RX100.

Main recommendation is the D3300.

The best starting camera is the best camera you can afford, a Nikon D810 isn't any more difficult to use than a D3100. So what is your budget?

The best one you can afford. I would go t3i/t5i/70D for canon and d3300/d5100 for nikon.

Canon usually does a better video then nikon. The 70D is a vide beast but expensive. t3i or t5i would be my choice. Difference is a few buttons and the touch screen.

Don't forget about getting some decent glass. You could have a higher end body but with a cheap kit lens you are only going to get so far with you're images.

when starting the kit lenses will do, aslong you aren't going to do anything crazy/profesional with them like party photography where the light is unstable as hell.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.
