Putting a PC into a DVD player, oh boy

Molten

Hello awesome community,

i was inspired by the mod24 event to make a modded pc and i found this old dvd player that didnt work but looks pretty cool and brings back memories so ive stripped out everything inside and i am ready to mod it but.... i need to know what to make space for in the case and where to put everything so my question is what hardware should i put in this pc? its dimensions are about 280mm x 190 mm x 60 mm i was thinking a mini itx an apu either one or two sticks of 8gb 2400 ram some sort of ssd but i dont know about the power supply, maybe having the power supply on the outside is there a better cleaner option and would all this fit?

thankyou in advance

@Molten

Can you post pictures of the DVD player so we can have a better idea of what we're dealing with?

I'm assuming the 60mm is the height? Have a look at the Intel Thin Mini-ITX platform. They also need external power bricks (laptop style) so that's a bonus.

1. Take pics of the DVD player in question

2. Give us the dimensions

BTW, great idea.

how would that be cooled, i watched the animation and noticed there was no cpu/apu cooler intalled

There is a reference Intel cooler available which would exhaust the air straight out the case, but only cool the CPU and nothing around it or you can get a Silverstone one that cools the CPU as well as pretty much everything around it, but then spreads the warm air back into the case so you'll definitely want to use at least one exhaust fan in combination with that.

Erh, you cannot really put a GPU in them no. It's an Intel platform so only Intel chips will fit (in case of the Asus H81T the Socket 1150 ones), no AMD. Intel chips come with HD4400/4600 graphics though which is more than fine for movies, like in a home theatre PC.

For AMD, there is the AM1 platform, for which some motherboard do support external power bricks but it's not as thin. On the upside; they use regular RAM and such.

so no gaming for intel but amd has gaming but is taller, would it be too tall for this build? (60mm) and would any of the available amd options, if not too tall of course, which have the external power option be any good for gaming and how would the ssd be installed with the given type of power?

Well, the Thin Mini-ITX is considered 'half-height' at 25mm so a normall one /should/ not exceed 50mm. Adding in the thickness of the case panels, some standoffs at the AMD stock cooler though, it will probably not fit. But then again the AMD AM1 series CPU are also very cheap budget chips so honestly you're not going to be able to play games on either, unless you go with a full-on APU, but those are on the FM2 socket and all FM2 motherboard require the standard 24Pin and 4/8Pin EPS so you'd have to fit a traditional power supply in there somehow.

That said, if the graphics card needs additional power connectors, you wouldn't be able to use it anyway.

On the Intel ones, the Sata ports should be powered, so an SSD should not need an additional Sata power cable, but you can also plug an mSata SSD directly into the motherboard itself. I don't know about AMD, sorry.

so would it be possible to get a regular modular power supply and have it external and get longer cables, route them through the case and secure those cables somehow and then just do that?

Erhm... probably could but honestly that'd be ugly and just destroy the whole idea of building a PC in such small enclosure.

If you really want a gaming PC in a small, DVD-player-like case, pick up a Silverstone RVZ01. One or the other really.

That's even smaller and they will have the CPU (+GPU) installed on-board and they will both suck. Your plan to play games on it us just kinda of a no go tbh.

This just dawned on me..

Would you mind using an ARM-based system?

i.e. Raspberry Pi or ODroid

They might be easy enough to work with for something that slim... You'll be limited to certain distributions of Linux though...

Depending on your choice of setup you can get one of those low power boards which are natively power by a power brick as suggest or go for a standard ITX system, and a low power GPU like a 750ti using a PicoPSU which is as compact as it can possibly get:

I suggest you to take a look at @ungreedy ITX buiild inside of a NES, he's using a PicoPSU so he'll have more information on it.

If this work wow :D

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

If you can find one of the older APEX DVD players made in 2001-2002, I can see it being possible.
