Former peasant--first build--X99-hackintosh

bomerr

Hello Everyone.

I've known since the late 90s how to take apart a PC and reinstall an OS but I never built my own rig.  But these last few months I've been watching the great videos put up by Linus and the NCIX crew and they have really inspired me to build a custom rig.

If you're only using it for gaming you would be fine with an i5.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

I wouldn't go with x99, sticking with a Z97 mobo will be good enough, and much cheaper which will allow you to get a GTX 980.

I'd suggest an i5 4690K, MSI Z97-G55 SLI, GTX 980, then pretty much everything else you have on the list is fine except the ddr4, as z97 only supports ddr3.

Or if you want to go that little bit overboard with a CPU which will not improve fps in gaming by much, you could go with an i7 4790K.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I'm going to be using it as a Hackintosh primary.

The reason i went with the 5820k is because of the Microcenter deal which made it only ~100-200 extra versus the 4790k combo.

I'm more worried about the GTX 970 because I hear the drivers for it only exist in the current beta Yosemite OS. Regardless I'll install windows 10 for now and if I can't get Hackintosh to work, I'll wait a few weeks until the final build of Yosemite is out and more people try messing around with it.

Black Jesus and Gayben welcome you to the master race.

I'd get a hard drive for mass storage and maybe a liquid CPU cooler if I were you also :D

That's not really a good reason to go with the 5820K, considering it is only marginally more powerful than a 4790K for gaming. And at that point, you could have had a GTX 980, making a larger gaming improvement.

And as for the whole Hackintosh thing, don't be suprised that it won't work yet.

Main Rig: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) KLEVV CRAS XR RGB DDR4-3600 | Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX | Storage: 512GB SKHynix PC401, 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus, 2x Micron 1100 256GB SATA SSDs | GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra 10GB | Cooling: ThermalTake Floe 280mm w/ be quiet! Pure Wings 3 | Case: Sliger SM580 (Black) | PSU: Lian Li SP 850W

Server: CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100 | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) Crucial DDR4 Pro | Motherboard: ASUS PRIME B550-PLUS AC-HES | Storage: 128GB Samsung PM961, 4TB Seagate IronWolf | GPU: AMD FirePro WX 3100 | Cooling: EK-AIO Elite 360 D-RGB | Case: Corsair 5000D Airflow (White) | PSU: Seasonic Focus GM-850

Miscellaneous: Dell Optiplex 7060 Micro (i5-8500T/16GB/512GB), Lenovo ThinkCentre M715q Tiny (R5 2400GE/16GB/256GB), Dell Optiplex 7040 SFF (i5-6400/8GB/128GB)

Well at any rate, X99 for gaming makes no sense.

From what I have been reading on the Hackintosh boards, Gigabytes mobos are the most compatible so I really wanted a Gigabyte mobo.

@ Microcetner it is 299.99 for a 5820k; so I payed 326 after tax. Then I got another 40 off the mobo when I bundled together. The only issue is everyone in the area knows about the deals so the good mobos sell FAST. I got lucky when i saw a ga-x99-ud4 in stock; which is one of the cheapest x99 mobos. I could have passed on the deal but then i'd need to keep F5ing for a good z97 mobo to be in stock.

The problem currently isn't the motherboard, it's the chipset and CPU. It will come at some point, but not quickly. However, you have a very nice machine there.

Why would you install Windows 10? It has built in keyloggers and currently no driver support for GPUs, so gaming or anything that would utilize the GPU is out of the question. Honestly, ANY os would be better than the Windows 10 Dev preview.

Hope you don't have hard drive issues. Make sure you get the latest one on from an ssd as that board won't post with a lot of mechanicals.

Except it just uses windows 8 drivers at this point seeing as it's practically identical.

Keep in mind, windows 7 and 8 drivers are usually compatible. Windows doesn't change much from version to version

Edit: It's a solid build OP, but you might not be able to hackintosh immediately as it's been stated, because the support isn't their yet. It'll only be a matter of time, though.

Also you're build costs pretty much the same as mine and is better :(

Got the 980.

I'm pretty close to finishing, the only issues I still have left are audio and true power management.

By the way does anyone have good [modern] links for overclocking cpu, ram and gpu?

Why all the hate for the 5820k? It is a great price and alternative to the 4790k, great for doing lots of stuff at once
