Is Amd fx 8350 good

Yes it's an 8 core processor but on paper the benchmarks show that it's worse than an i5 and is near the performance of a dual core i3 or laptop cpu.

Would the 8350 do ok with 1080p graphics at a decent framerate with ( r9 280x)

It's a great chip. I have one and absolutely love it. And yes it would be fine with a 280X.

I have an 8320 and a R9 290 and that works great at 1080p, 8350 will be fine.

It performs better than i5s in applications that actually use all eight threads, but in games that only utilize one or two cores its performance will be that of an i3 which is still very respectable.

It's probably old because it's... old. It's been a couple years since they released it. Doh.

It doesn't mean it's bad, he's just saying it's not nearly as new as some of the other CPUs.

Welcome to the forum.

Its a great chip. Had a 8350 and a 280X setup and it was fantastic. Especially when you overclock both cpu and gpu.

It is a great budget cpu imo. It will do just fine.

waiting for the intel boys to jump in and ruin the thread.
in single threaded apps an intel cpu WILL be 60% faster while being more efficient, but in those apps anything over a pentium-k is a waste.
in the modern world its more than enough for most tasks but the 8320 is better bang/buck once overclocked.
im not limited by my cpu in any games i play and can still get a higher cinebench score than most i5's that cost more and it certainly comes in handy when transcoding and all 8 threads are pinned at 100%

I'd like to see linus do an updated test in todays game's & apps against cost equivilant cpu's (on the 8350 vs i5-4460, 8320 vs i3-4350) so that both sides can put their handbags away.
