Yup but it is sketchy. Unless you hit the temp limit while overclocking rather than the chip clock limit, it really isn't worth it.

Yea there are literally water cooling blocks that are made to be mounted directly to the silicon dye.

Yea de-lidding is effective but scary, I would never do it myself.

 

 

On a slightly related topic-

 

I saw the passively cooled GPU in the first few seconds of the video. Not knowing that Gigabyte made mid-high end passive GPU's I immediately searched for passively cooled Gigabyte GPU's and found out what card the guy in the video likely has.

I know that there's passive 250's and 750 Ti's and GT 640's but they are small, that 5770 is quite large and it was surprising that they built it and I thought it was interesting.

Delidding is a temporary thing. It's all about Intel's f/up and attempts to correct it. AFAIK the Devil's Canyon parts don't delid well at all. I'm sure that the next versions will be worse yet.

The gains aren't there. The whole point of delidding is that Intel fk/d the compound between the lid and chip. Delidding and directly cooling the silicon gave some good gains. The new chips have a different compound and the difference between the delidded chips and regular ones isn't as great. Intel's efficiency has gone up. By Broadwell it probably won't make a difference whether the cpu is delidded or not for cooling. Since this whole delidding thing voids your warranty it's just as well to leave the whole thing alone.
