Can I swap out a K70 RGB's switches?

Izaya Orihara

So as some of you may know I'm a little bit of a perfectionst and I don't like the new logo on the K70 RGB. I also want Cherry MX browns so just buying the K70 RGB with the normal logo is not an option (only comes with reds) . My plan is to buy the version with the Normal logo and one with Cherry MX browns with the tribal stamp. Swap out the switches and sell the other one.

Can I do this just like in this video?

Thanks ( Don't hate on me)

You can just swap the logos to make it easier.

Likely, you could do it, but it wouldn't exactly be fun to do.

Not sure whether it'll be that easy with these new switches. The leds are made into the switch itself so I don't think you'll be able to switch the switches without any risk/damage.

And it'll probably be easier to just get your hands on an original corsair logo and just place it over the gaming logo. Use a magnetic strip or something else :)

I don't think so. If i'm not mistaken, the new RGB switches use a new mounting system.

Sorry if I missed something, but why not get the RGB version with browns and the old triple sails logo? Unless you actually love doing so much work and prefer doing what you suggested yourself.

Afaik it's just the LED that had been moved from the switch to the PCB.

Guess I'm rather behind in all the new keyboards thing, I thought Corsair would release the other mx cherry's at a later date, assuming your reaction, they'll only ever release reds?

Actually the LEDs used to be on the switch now they use a transulent housing and mount the led to the PCB. http://youtu.be/eRvRs--AbuE?t=2m25s

This seems like a bit of work, like posts above, I would just get my hands on an older Corsair logo and replace the tramp stamp.

Nope they released a batch of K70 RGBs with the normal logo and then the other switches and the new batch of  reds come with a new ugly logo.

In the second half of 2014, Corsair will bring the concept to life by launching the world’s first Cherry MX RGB-based gaming keyboards. The new keyboards promise to give gamers all of the precision, feel, and reliability of Cherry MX-based Corsair gaming keyboards enhanced with new personalization and gaming customization provided by nearly limitless per-key lighting combinations. The new keyboards will be available in several Cherry switch types: super-fast Cherry MX Red, the light tactile feedback of Cherry MX Brown, or the tactile and audible feedback provided by Cherry MX Blue.

Switch out the logo's. Seems the easiest.

I did, but I misinterpreted a part of it, but anyways:

So instead of taking the sticker off, and because of a stupid logo, you're going to go through all of this mess?

I mean no ill will for this next comment, but it seems dumb to go through that just because of a logo that could be more easily changed than switches. 2muchwork4mepersonally

But if I remeber correct (I can't check it right now as not at my place) the original K70's logo is not just a sticker but it's stamped in and I like that. If it takes me an hour or so to get it done then that's fine by me.

Yes you can. Just be REALLY careful. They are made of a different material. I snapped one when I opened it up. I have the switch opener tool and I was careful, but it still snapped. You will need to desoldier everything, and the PCB is different, so just be careful and make sure everything is desoldiered before you pull out the switch.

Also MAKE SURE YOU GROUND YOURSELF. There are some extremely fragile electronics in there.

I took out mine from the Cherry Red board I preordered. I put in clear stems and made me some Ergo Clears. I put them into my Clear Ergo Dox With Clear Keycaps. Everything is hardwired with fiber-optic stuff. So in is literally all transparent, two PCB's are in a separate box. It is the coolest thing, and it impresses everyone that sees it.

(I also used Clear Plastic cables for good measure)

I need to solder stuff? Why? That guy in the video doesn't need to solder anything...

That is for a PCB mounted switch. 90% of all boards today are Plate mounted (better stability) and it usually has other benifits too. Unless you have a custom plate like on a Phantom or a KMAC then you cannot remove the top of the switch without removing it from the PCB. You WILL snap the legs. And you cannot RMA it because you broke it. it was not a defect.

Crapbaskets! I don't want to solder stuff...
