Budged Upgrade (Gaming PC)

Kthulhuth

Hey guys,

so this is my (quiet old) gaming pc:

Motherboard:Asus P7P55D (3 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 2 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR3 DIMM, Audio, Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394)

CPU: QuadCore Intel Core i5 750, 3166 MHz (24 x 132)

RAM: Kingston 4096 MB (DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM)

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 OC Edition

Since newer games become more and more difficult to play (demanding)

I want to upgrade my gaming-rig.

First sayed: i know my system is crap nowadays. But i just started to study again and therefore my purse shrinked a lot :P

So maybe you guys can help me on how to start upgrading (inexpensive in mind) so i can keep on playing current games  for a while.

Best regards,

Kthulhuth

Budget?

Well... I think the first thing you need to upgrade is Ram, then the CPU/Mobo and lastly, the GPU. The 660 is still quite a good GPU that can handle high setting on most game just fine. Ram is something you need ASAP, and CPU need to be upgraded first to avoid potential bottleneck for any newer GPU. Keep in mind that you may or maynot need to change your PSU depend on what you upgrade.

Also another update you need to do ASAP is SSD. Normally I'd recommend getting it right after you upgrade your RAM, but with the upgrade of the Mobo you usually need to reinstall windows just to make sure all driver are installed correctly so... get an SSD after you upgrade your CPU and Mobo

As for which part to go for, For Ram, any 4GB stick is ok, for CPU/Mobo, an i5 4690k and a Z97 Mobo, I'd suggest MSI Z97 G55 or G45 (note that the G55 is cheaper since it's not as fancy looking and feature rich like the G45), then the GPU, a GTX 970 or so. But new part coming out very quickly so whenever you are going to upgrade, just ask us here and we will tell you which part you should upgrade too

My rig: Intel Core i7 4790k | MSI Z97 PC Mate | GSKILL Ripjaws X 16GB 1866MHz | ADATA Premier SP550 480GB SSD | Seagate Barracuda 3TB | Seagate Barracuda 2TB  | MSI Gaming X GTX 1070 | Thermaltake Versa N21 | Corsair CX550M Semi Modular PSU | AOC G2460PF 144Hz | Logitech G502 | GSKILL Ripjaws KM780  | GAMDIAS HEPHAESTUS V2  PCPartPicker | Old Build Log | New Build Log

Thanks for the quick answers.

There is no real budged since i have to rip every last euro out of my chest.

So lets start with the RAM, shall we?

Which one should i get?

Id like to spend about 70-100€ on it at maximum.

Cause you already have a 1333MHz Ram, getting better speed ram dont mean anything since the system will bring it down to 1333MHz anyway, so just grab any cheap DDR3 4GB stick Ram you can find out there, should not cost you more than 30-40 EUR. For example this one http://de.pcpartpicker.com/part/kingston-memory-hx316c10f4

But bear in mind this thing: I made this suggestion on the assumption that you are currently have 1 4GB Ram stick, not 2 2GB Ram stick. if you have 2 2GB Ram stick then it's time to throw them away and get 2x4GB Ram stick instead.

If so then these http://de.pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-memory-cmy8gx3m2b2133c9 are very cheap on amazon for some reason... But it's one of the best you can find

Or these if you cant find the one up there http://de.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f31600c11d8gnt

As for your 2x2 Ram now... I suppose you can still use it if you have 4 Ram slot in your Mobo. it just not something usually recommend since it took alot of space. I'm currently using 3x4GB Ram since I have 2x4 and my friend gave me 1 4GB stick for free so... yup~

like I said the system/computer will bring it all down to 1333 MHz since one of the ram you are using is 1333MHz, other than that there isnt any real problem. The speed different may seem like alot but for gaming you wont really notice anything. When you do stuff that actually use Ram speed alot like ... some stuff (I cant remember any atm, but not gaming for sure) then that speed will come into play.

Allright.

And the Volt difference is also not important?

1,5V on mine

1,65 on your suggested one

Hmm... about this I'm not sure... I think the mobo should handle it without any problem since you can usually OC the voltage on those ram differently, but better check out with those guy on the subforum about Ram in LinusTechTips :P

Don't mix RAM. It's not very good and you don't know if the two different sticks will be compatible. My suggestion is G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB (2x4gb) DDR3-1600 ram.
