Brand New PC Build Thoughts

Hello guys, I just finished my list of PC components so I would like to hear your opinions on it:

CPU:Intel i5 4690k

CPU Cooler:Cooler Master Nepton 280L

MOBO: ASUS Maximus VII Hero

GPU: MSI nVidia GTX 970

RAM: 2x4GB Kingston HyperX Beast 2400MHz

SSD: Samsung 840 250GB EVO

HDD: Western Digital 1TB Black

HDD: Western Digital 1TB Black      (In RAID 1)

PSU: Seasonic X-750

Case: Corsair Graphite 760T

Monitor: Asus VS247H

I'll be mostly using this PC for gaming. I'll probably go GTX 970 SLI when I have the money for it. So what do you think? :P

Hi, looks good. Some components are overkill but if you like them.. oh well. But I would pick Crucial MX100 SSD over Samsung 840 EVO any day.

I would change the psu to the EVGA Supernova G2 750W. It will (Should) be cheaper than the Seasonic and it is just as good.

The WD Black is a bit pricey. You could get a Seagate 3TB or similar for less.

Why would you even need 3 TB of storage? Get like 2x Seagate Barracutas 1TB and raid them

Looks nice. I'm gonna do something similar. I don't know about the ram though. You got 8gb of ram on 2 sticks so you can only ever upgrade to 16gb (4 sticks). Otherwise you need to fork out even more. I'd suggest go 16gb of ram for now.

Edit: I like the SSD. But because you're using an ssd you dont need a WD Black HDD. Get a Blue or even a Green and save yourself some cash. Linus even recommends the green in a few of his builds.

Looks fine, but it's likely that you won't end up getting sli because there will be a better solution by the time you are getting it. (unless it's like a few weeks after building it)

The 16 GB kits are more expensice and I'm on a tight budget.

The EVGA is not availible in my country ( Serbia ).

Ok which WD do you recommend for RAID? RAID 1 or 0?

Hey there,

The build is a pretty decent one and I really like it. The SSD seems big enough to carry your OS and may be if it is enough also for the games you're playing the most or the programs you use the most, you could combine it with a standard WD Blue drive or an energy-efficient Green one. The Greens, however, are recommended for secondary storage. If you want a RAID, I strongly recommend the WD Red line (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810), because it is especially designed for NAS and tested in 24/7 environment. If the most important thing for you is performance, than RAID 0 (alternatively called striping) could be the best decision. However, with RAID 0 you won't have any redundancy and if one drive within the array fails, you could loose all data. RAID 1 (or mirroring) is much more secure, basically you'll have the same information mirrored on two drives at the same time and if anything goes wrong with either of the drives, you'll have your data safe on the other one. Please note that RAID 1 is still no backup. A backup is to have the information secured at a different physical location. So, it all depends on your needs - a RAID 0 with a backup on an external, a RAID 1, the SSD with a green drive of a larger capacity... There are a lot of options.

I hope you'll soon have your rig ready and I'll enjoy if you care to share some pictures of it. Also, if you have any questions, I'll be around.

Cheers,

Titania_WD
