"Unboxing" and First Impressions
Gold 16GB

Unboxing Experience:
So Apple has been said to have some of the best packaging and unboxing experiences around. Other manufacturers have started to catch up. This go around Apple pulled a bit of a fast one changing their typical box art to an embossed outline of the device. Along the side there is no "6" next to the Apple logo and iPhone leafing. The lettering is colored the same the color of the phone.

Inside the box you have the phone, a tray/envelope with stickers literature and sim tray tool, and underneath the nicely arranged Earbuds (same as last generation) lightning cable and charger. The charger doesn't offer any faster charging than previous versions and the USB side of the lightning cable isn't reversible as a lot of people conjectured it might be.

Overall it's the same ol' thing we're used to for the previous generation iPhones (the 5c changed things up a bit). I wonder if they went with the more minimal box art to throw off all of the bootleg manufacturers stuffing iOS skinned android internals inside dummy iPhone 6 units?

Design:
So this seems to be a polarizing subject. It's a fairly large change in design language for Apple. They've gotten rid of the sharp edges and chamfers to try to create a seamless and continuous looking device. They even rounded the front glass to make it flow into the curvature of device's side. It felt weird in my hand at first but I quickly got used to it.

I think the metal unibody looks quite nice. A lot of people say to looks like the HTC One, but holding it makes me think of the Sony Xpheria Z2. The antenna bands are probably one of the most controversial design elements. While other manufacturers (and previous generations of iPhone) have tried to hide these to varying degrees of success, Apple has put them in the forefront. Widening and making them high contrast on this version of the phone. I'm not a fan of the gold colored iPhones in general, and the white antenna bands compound that. The silver and space grey versions are more subtle and the direction I'd go if choosing a color.

Apple has updated the look of the buttons to match the longer flatter look of the phone. And that's probably the biggest and most noticeable design change the size. Apple is actually having to play catch up when it comes to offering larger phones and displays. The iPhone 6 is very noticeably larger than the 5/5c/5s. It's still not all that large in the wider spectrum of Android phones, however.

A big concern for me is the height of the device. They've moved the power button to the right side, but the device seems taller than it needs to be considering the size of the screen. It's taller than other devices that have a .5" larger diagonal screen size. The height is undoubtedly has to do with the thinness of the device and the fact that their design language requires it be vertically symmetrical.

I like the feel in my hand. I can reach all 4 corners of the screen. But I have fairly large hands and others might have more difficulty. Apple introduced "Reachability Mode" which allows the actionable items on screen to slide down to within thumb's reach but tapping (not pressing) the Home button twice. It's somewhat similar to "One Handed Mode" on Android phones. Not very elegant but will work if you're on a busy subway using a railing with one hand and your phone with the other.

I also wonder about the ability for users with smaller hand to reach the mute slider/button with one hand. You can easily flip it in your hand and slide it with your thumb but if on a Facetime call or watching media you might not want to have to do that. We'll see if other people see this as an issue as well.

Some other small touches are the shiny Apple logo on the back of the device which is a separate component and the protruding Camera which as caused a bit of uproar. I don't have a problem with the Camera sticking out as long as the Sapphire glass covering it doesn't scratch or crack!

Construction:
I like the overall design of the phone and a big part of that is the construction! Yes I am fully aware of #BendGate and all of the drop tests. The 4.7" iPhone 6 doesn't have nearly as much of a problem with bending. That said I believe Apple has a responsibility to address this in a more comprehensive and helpful way than they have so far! People are paying up to almost $1,000 (regardless if you get it on contract or not you end up paying the full price of the device). To dismiss this as only happening to 9 people in the first week of the device out spits in the face of consumers IMO. It's not a problem unless Apple says it's a problem apparently.

Apple has said of the iPhone 6, "iPhone 6 isn’t simply bigger — it’s better in every way [sic]." I put [sic] in there because I can't stand the way they talk about the iPhone as if it's a person. It's a Phone, use definitive articles you Jackasses! Sorry... Dat digression... But this bending issue isn't new. Previous versions of the iPhone, and even many Android devices, have had issues with bending in the past. If this device was better in every would #Bendgate be a thing?

Putting #bendgate aside I think the rest of the construction of this device is quite nice. The metal body feels nice and other than the huge structural design flaw in the 6 Plus especially, seems like it should be fairly durable over time.

I would definitely recommend using a case with this device! I don't like cases. They impart too much of their own style onto something I'm buying because I already like it's design. Even if I get tired of the look I'd rather get a skin, which also protects against scratches, than a bulky case. But alas it has been shown that with cases the likelihood of bending or screen shattering is greatly decreased.

The screen is not Sapphire Crystal. It's "Ion Strengthened" according to Apple. Some think this is because it either cost too much or they weren't able to get the manufacturing difficulties worked out. I've heard people express the desire for Apple to offer it as an option because they'd be willing to spend the extra cash for piece of mind. This however isn't inline with Apple's stance. They want to make 1, well now 2, device(s) that is perfect for everyone. They've broken their stance that the iPhone display needed to be larger, and also that they'd only ever offer 1 device so maybe more customization will come in the future.

The lens and home button do have Sapphire crystal covers. So the protruding lens should hopefully stand up to most abrasive surfaces and not ruin every picture and video you take. And you won't lose Touch ID to scratches on the button.

My iPhone 6 review is simple, since it applies to normal people and not nerds like us:

The iPhone 6. It takes calls. It takes photos. It has access to Snapchat and Instagram. It also makes calls, if you're still into that sorta thing.

5/5, who gives a shit what you buy as a phone. No one. Thats who gives a shit.

It's a real bad Idea gettin a 16 gb phone now adays. I've have 16 gb since the 4 and now even with minamal apps and about 4 gb (200 ish songs) of music, it fills up fast. App are getting bigger and bigger. Maybe that's why I opted for the 64gb. I would have been content with 32 though

WHY BUY THE GOLD ONE?

IT'S DISGUSTING

Hey! Thanks for discussing! I didn't choose the gold device. In the video I say I'd go with the Space Gray. We, that is me and the company I work for, create support content for smartphones. As such I'm in a fortunate position of having access to every smartphone certain carriers carry. We have all 3 colors but this is the device I have access to.

I want to leverage that access to present relatively unbiased (in that I don't have to defend my purchase like a lot of other people tend to do in their reviews, and I don't depend on the good graces of manufacturer's for review units) review of some of the Flagship phones that cross my path. I hope people will enjoy the videos I spend a lot of time making, learn about the device and are able to make informed buying decisions.

I think I have a pretty unique perspective seeing as I've used (albeit not extensive use in every case) hundreds of smartphones over the last 4 years.

Thanks for taking a look.

Am i the only one, who the YT plugin is broken for?

Nope, Mine works fine.

Nice review but I'm not purchasing an iPhone, I don't like the design nor anything about the new iPhone. Only thing I like is iOS.

Everything else seems outdated like the specifications of the phone its self.

Never the less, nice review :D

@Atomika Thanks. I'm on the opposite side. I tend to like Apple's physical design but I'm not a fan of iOS...

There are lots of other phones with good hardware and good design, as well as versions of the iPhone 6 with more storage built in.

Bare minimum hardware? Then how the fuck do they beat the tar out of nearly everyone with not only their most recent A8 but also the processor from last year's iPhone 5s?

Also design is not arbitrary. That's a quite common mentality 'round these parts but if you ever meet an industrial designer you'll see what I mean. There's a very perceptible difference between good and bad design choices. What's hard for the designer is realizing these before the user does.

1. I can think of one, maybe two. One M8 and Xperia Z3.

2. Why? Just because you don't like me? You can't even think of a convincing reason why you hate me besides "HE LIKES IPHONES TOO MUCH!!!"

I feel sorry for OP. This thread is just full of hate. If you aren't here to actually read a reflect on the review, I suggest you turn the other way. He already purchased the phone, so I see no point in openly criticizing his past decision.

After holding my sister's 6, I actually like the feel of the rounded edges. This, coupled with the thinness, makes the phone a lot easier to grip.

It's something you have to be prepared for when you put yourself and your work out there. Especially in a tech forum where people are very opinionated.

I noted in a previous post this phone was bought for work. We have one in every color and different capacities. We also have the 6 Plus. This particular device is the one I have access to.

I like the feel too. Took a little bit of getting used.

Here's my review of my iPhone 6 Plus. It's better than my Nexus 5 in terms of battery life, camera I could care less about since I have a dedicated shooter.

Overall it's a great phone. Still having issues since I've been on Android for 6 months

Yeah, about that camera. It's suppose to say be the camera that does the job and that's about it. Anything further than that is more of extra stuff. But it's good to have a decent/okay camera on your phone. It'd make it easier to go to places than bringing a dedicated shooter.

It's pretty damn good. The AF is very fast and smart, low light seems to be much better than I was expecting.

Here is a out of camera shot using the iPhone...
