Recommended Cheap Monitor For PS4 Gaming?

nickc98

I've got £150 to spend on a monitor that I'm going to use mainly for PS4 gaming and would like the monitor to have a screen size of 23" or larger.

I've got a couple ideas but would like to see what you guys can come up with. I'd really appreciate if you could link me to the product on the UK amazon site but this isn't needed.

Thanks :)

ASUS is very hard to beat for cheap 1080p monitors. I've been using one for 6 years now and it is still fantastic.

ASUS VN247H-P 23.6-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor

ASUS VX239H 23-Inch Widescreen IPS Monitor (listed in Shaqo_Wyn's post above)

It's really up to you whether you go with a TN panel (first monitor above) or IPS (second) as they offer different benefits. A TN panel with not likely have any noticeable lag whatsoever while an IPS almost assuredly will; an IPS will deliver better color accuracy, contrast and viewing angles than TN.

Nice choices but aren't the response times on those monitors a bit slow? I've been told that 5ms and under is what's recommended?

See my above post. IPS panels have slower response times than TN panels.

Nah, even if you're used to 1-2ms response time you'll barely notice it. Lower response times also means getting a TN-panel which means not as good color reproduction. You'll have a bigger chance of noticing the 60Hz refresh rate of these monitors but it doesn't really matter since the PS4 outputs at max 1080p @60fps anyway.

IPS and TN panels... Gives me something else to consider when buying a monitor, I never really thought about that.

Would you recommend either of the two or is it just down to preference?

Well, I can't honestly say you'll be able to notice the very slightly slower response time of an IPS panel on PS4, it's usually us never-console-always-PC people who will choose TN over IPS because with better graphics processing power, the monitors response time might actually be the perceivable bottleneck.

While it is a matter of preference, IPS is probably the better choice because they're much better for color and viewing angle, and the latter tends to be more important for console gaming.

Alright, thanks, I'll look out for IPS monitors from now on and might even compare those to a selection on TN monitors to finally make my mind up. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Yes.:) The better color reproduction on IPS panels if well worth the higher response time which you probably won't even notice.

No problem! As I said, I'm partial to ASUS monitors but there are many good options. Remember to mark the thread as solved when you make a decision. Happy shopping  :D

I tend to prefer Asus over BenQ or LG too but I'll give the others a look, I won't completely rule them out. Thanks for the help, I will mark this as solved when I feel I've made my mind up :)
