Games running on a NAS

Chriz6097

Would it be a horrible mistake to try and run my games off of a NAS? I was planning on creating a FreeNAS server and to save $80 I want to take my 2TB HDD out of my system and put it in the NAS. In reality its only a few games that I play every so often and the most regularly played games are on my 240GB ssd.

I don't see bandwidth over ethernet being a problem considering I could get two gigabit ethernet cables going from each PC, I'm really wondering if there are significant issues that would make it hard to use.

My System Specs: (Short list) i7 4770k, GTX 780, many SSD's, a 2 TB HDD(deceased :( ), Corsair 650D. Full list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kchriz6097/saved/8dh7YJ

Upgrade Plan: Acquire some Black Noctuas then add 16 or 32GB of 2133MHz memory

I'm going to be getting one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157419 so more than likely my performance will be similar to yours.

What OS will you be running?

Running off a NAS is okay, as long as you don't need to do maintenance on your NAS and your network is up. It's a mixed blessing.

If you run FreeNAS then you can take advantage of the built-in caching features to speed up loading times significantly.

I'm probably going to be using win 7 since I've got a copy already.
