Talos

A Modern IBM Sleeper

Guided Walkthrough | Build Log

Specs:

CPU: Intel i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz

Motherboard: MSI Z68MA-G45 (MicroATX, socket 1155)

RAM: 16GB (4x4GB) assorted DDR3 1600

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12

GPU: Zotac GTX 970 4GB

Storage:

Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB [2011] (boot)

Maxtor 200GB [2005] (storage) (disconnected)

WD Red 3TB [2014] (storage)

Power Supply: Antec HCG 620M (semi-modular)

So yeah. This is my first build log, but certainly not my first build. I encountered MANY issues I really could not have planned for during the entire progress of this build, which I've written about in the "Build Log" link above. Check it out and tell me what you think!

Some facts:

Time Taken: A week and a half waiting on all packages, around four hours to get to a POST state, and another four hours to tweak.

Required Costs: $30 (just case)

Actual Costs: Around $600 to get everything together (case, GPU, HDD, cooler, bay adapter, cables)

Build log promised on Monday night and delivered Wednesday night, but oh well. Enjoy everyone! This build was a lot of fun and will continue to evolve. I'll be sure to update it every time I get new parts.

Been waiting for someone to do something like this. Love sleepers in terms of cars and computers.

I've got an older poweredge case sitting around. I should think about fooling with that thing.

Eric S. Raymond used an E6600 from 2005 until 12/30/14 or open source software creation. Raw data computations in excess of 18GB each. Core 2 Duos still have tons of life left, my friend.
