SMS Self Destructing SSDs UPDATE: Pricing and Availability

werto165

uliymqz2kl3l7mi4loem.jpg

Now you can buy SSDs which will physically break themselves when you send an SMS, with many fail safes if something goes wrong. I couldn't find the pricing on the website, but I assume it's going to be expensive.

"Losing a laptop full of personal files like family photos is upsetting, but losing a laptop full of private corporate info and trade secrets is instead downright terrifying. So when you absolutely can't risk misplaced data falling into the wrong hands, a GSM-equipped SSD drive that can remotely physically self-destruct guarantees the utmost of security and privacy."

"As soon as you realize a laptop or other hardware with the SecureDrives SSD installed has gone missing, all you need to do is send a pre-defined text message to its unique cellular number and the drive will be immediately destroyed. And we're not talking a quick format to erase its contents either. The SSD's enclosure features built-in mechanisms that will physically destroy the flash memory chips inside, making the data completely unrecoverable."

"The second choice is to go further and fragment the NAND Flash and security controller via a physical destrcution process that takes place after the encryption key is fliped. This physcial fragmentation effectively renders your data safe from any form of forensic data recovery technique known, now and in the future. With the NAND Flash physically broken it cannot be mounted on special Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) through which vast banks of computer processing power are used in an attempt to access your data and crack encryption codes.  "

That would be quite handy and safe for quite a lot businesses. Considering the amount of data they lose by losing laptops and such I think this is a good idea.

NSA: If you use SecureDrives you're obviously doing something illegal, so you should let us look at your data.

Plot twist: It sends a copy of all your data to NSA before it self-destructs.

What does the drive do to physically destroy the chips? Is it a small explosive?

I wonder how much one of these costs, also, does it self destruct if it is plugged into a new computer?

I literally can't think of a single use that this would have for a consumer outside of illegal things.

It's still cool, don't get me wrong. I just don't get the point of this if you're not doing something illegal, at least as a consumer.

I was thinking a little hydraulic pole inside the enclosure over each nand chip which extended when you sent the message

Or you could just encrypt the drive...

No because then the NSA will just tell you to tell them the password or you'll be fined a base fee of $250,000 and this fee is doubled each day that you don't give them the password.

"Im just going to text my mom"

"S**T! WRONG CONTACT!" :o

It's a specific predefined text though.

Bring a GSM jammer with you, problem solved.

Reading closer I see you can set a starvation period. This may or may not be desirable though as you could starve the drive to destroy data.

Well you most likely have the data backed up elsewhere and simply needed to allow people to work on it, so if it destructs you lose nothing and your enemy gains nothing.

And on the off chance that it isn't backed up you lose something but your enemy gains nothing, and since your company developed technology X one time it can most likely recreate it faster a second time.

Awesome, I love it! :D I was thinking about something like this for my HDD's. Just take the small explosives used in air bags and place them on HDD's! :D

Corporate diary, banking details for corporate clients, take over notes, contracts for large projects, notes from board meeting regarding layoffs, design plans for as yet not patented products, imagine if nvidia or amd new GPU architecture got leaked because someone lost their laptop?

But was that intentional?

Le Joke,  OCZ had a very bad run with ssd's

Or you could just encrypt the drive...

this is for when you need absolute data security, where somebody ripping the encrypted contents and using the people's botnet of china(no conspiracy theorist here, I just made that up) to break the encryption over months would actually be a possibility.

Probably just a piece of thermal memory wired in the chip or a forced over volt.

The perfect drive for all extremely illegal files xD

Or companies, sometimes it's worth loosing the data permanently than having it fall into other peoples hands. But it seems everyone here just thinks that these drives are for drug dealers, this is like the 5th post saying illegal activities.

Also, as someone who works for a security company part time, these would be perfect, they have drives containing information, settings, phones and keys of alarm systems, even those in banks, so now you can see the use. Don't get me wrong, that data is protected, but it's nothing that can't be eventually decrypted/brute forced. :P
