Harddrive Disconnecting - Is it Dying?

Innug

Hello Everyone!

So recently my harddrive will randomly just disconnect. I can look into my PC and it is connected but everything will disspear from my desktop and I am unable to save anything to my harddrive as my PC can simply not detect it. Everytime I restart my PC it's always connected, but usually for about 20 minutes before disconnecting. Is this definitely my harddrive causing the issue (It's a 1TB Seagate Barracuda that I've had for about 2 years), or could something else be forcing the harddrive to disconnect?

Thanks,

Innug

Also, should I be posting things like this in the Storage section or the troubleshooting section?

Troubleshooting.

Also, try switching out the cables.

Trouble shooting section would be my guess. Try using a different sata cable and port first.

yeah, your things shouldve come with more than 1 sata cable. try those out

if that doesnt work, then its your hard-drive

either one of these work fine:

Okay sorry, I'm just used to other forums where you place your troubleshooting thread in whichever topic it falls under. Hmm I'll have a look around for another sata cable. You're saying it should have come with my harddrive, or my motherboard?

Okay thanks! Do you recommend WD over Seagate? I also heard Linus say in one of his videos that no one should even be buying harddrives anymore since SSDs are so affordable. But to match the 1TB of storage I had, for an SSD that would cost me over $500 right? :/

Christmas special!?! Can't wait!  :D

although i cant really speak from experience, ive only dealt with WD drives and theyve served me very very well.

i found something thats actually pretty reasonable, if you have the money

although the price does seem a bit too good to be true, so id do some further research on it

Okay cool.

Hmm, just watched a review on it and it seems to be okay, but for some reason I'd prefer to keep my HDD and SSDs separate...not exactly sure why  :P

If you want to know more about the health of your HDD,

try to run some S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics tool on it, like

Crystaldiskmark or somesuch.

A list of the most common SMART attributes can be found

in this wikipedia article.

Hmm, I can't find the boxes for my parts, so no SATA cable as of yet.

I ran a test with Crystaldiskmark: http://imgur.com/0fUaKFE

Do the speeds look okay?
