A Budget Office Computer.

Hey guys this is my first build log, this is just a budget office for my Grandpa so it's nothing exceptional but I decided why not write a build log so here we go. The aim of this build is to build a PC that's compatible with the rest of the system, that's cheap, reliable and feels responsive the parts list is:

 

CPU: Intel Pentium G3240 3.1GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($69.00 @ PCCaseGear)

Motherboard: ASRock H81M Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($65.00 @ PCCaseGear)

Memory: Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($45.00 @ PCCaseGear)

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($65.00 @ PCCaseGear)

Power Supply: Corsair VS 350W ATX Power Supply  ($45.00 @ PCCaseGear)

Optical Drive: LG GH24NSB0 DVD/CD Writer  ($19.00 @ PCCaseGear)

Case: Coolermaster N500  ($55.00 @ PCCaseGear)

The parts have been ordered and should be arriving tomorrow. I'll be posting pictures as I start building.

I would go for an i3 over a Pentium simply because it will mean that it can stand the test of time

I agree, Intel's HD 4400 or 4600 graphics will be better and Pentium chips are only good for overclocking.

I would not jump on this train yet, my friend. It just so happens that the g3258 is the only pentium in a long time to be overclockable. The Pentiums are fine for office PCs.

If the budget had been bigger I would have gone with an i3 but since the goal was to make it as cheap as possible and that the most intensive thing the PC will be doing is a spread sheet I decided that a Pentium would suffice. Down the road if they decide in a few years they want another upgrade I can always put an i3 in it since I can't see Intel changing their consumer socket any time soon.

Hi guys time for the update, the parts arrived today and I started the build and finished the actual building and it went allot smoother than I expected, the build went without a major problem and so far all the parts work. First off the Cooler Master N500 is an awesome case and was great to work in for a $55 case I couldn't ask for more, the only trouble I had with it is that because of the way it is painted the motherboard stand-off's are a pain to install but in their defence they did include a stand-off to phillips head adapter so it wasn't a large issue just a bit of a pain. The worst part of the build was installing the CPU because folding down the retention arm was the most nerve racking thing, it just feels like something is about to break. Nothing did though so the build continues. After getting everything installed I was a little annoyed to find that the 24 pin connector and the 8 pin connector where both to short to be routed behind the motherboard tray so they had to be in full view but aside from that the cable management went well. Right now Ubuntu is just installing and that's as far as I'm getting today, tomorrow the not so fun stuff begins I have to get it connected the Frankenstein of a network that they have running currently, I'll keep you guys posted. But how about buying a NUC, a monitor and stick the NUC with the monitor using a strong tape?

I did that once, though it was a slim ITX chassis.

Not really. The case exhausted to the side and the monitor had vents at the top. But I screwed a VESA mount to the case side panel to hold it in place.
