Samsung to launch 27" 16:9 curved monitors (+ 34" 21:9 info)

After the launch of LG's amazing 34" curved monitor, Samsung has decided to release their own first curved PC monitor.

 

Samsung 27" SD590C at a mere $429.99.

 

First unveiled at IFA primo September 2014, Samsung has now priced their new 27" curved monitor to be released on the 1st of October 2014.

Specifications include:

  • VA-panel 16:9
  • 1920 x 1080 resolution
  • Typical brightness of 350 cd/m2.
  • Contrast ratio of 3000:1
  • 4 ms response time (G2G)
  • Refresh rate of 60 Hz
  • Two 5 watt 2-channel stereo speakers
  • 100x100 wall mount

Connectors:

  • D-sub port (WHY?)
  • HDMI port
  • DisplayPort
  • Audio-in jack and an audio-out jack (headphones)

Samsung 34" E790C Price/release date/specs TBA

 

This monitor was first unveiled at IFA primo September 2014, and has yet to get finalized specs and price. The estimated release date and price is yet to be announced, but the E model name, suggests a 2015 release.

My personal take:

 

I don't really see the point in a 1080p 27" monitor anymore. The SD590 should have been 1440p instead. I am really excited to see curved monitors coming to market, but I have to wonder if the curved nature, is really a benefit on a 16:9 aspect monitor. After seing Linus' review of the LG 34" 21:9 monitor, I am sold on curved monitors in the 21:9 aspect ratio. If it works on 16:9 will be interesting to see in a future review, once this monitor has reached the market.

 

For me though, the most exciting news, is the 34" 21:9 monitor from Samsung. 4ms and VA panel, contra LG's 5ms IPS panel is interesting, and should spark some nice competition. The LG is priced out of reach for most people, so this would be a welcoming release. However, the monitor is not officially released with full spec, so we can only guesstimate on the final product.

 

In any case, competition will result in lower prices, and usually a higher selection of products for us end consumers, so I am very glad to see these monitors popping up. (Now give me a Samsung 34" curved 21:9 with Adaptive Sync).

 

PS: Kill VGA D-sub. Kill it with fire.. then throw spiders in its burnt face. :angry:

Might care if the resolution was larger, but giong from 1680x1050 (22" Acer x223w) to 1920x1080 (about 309,000 pixles) doesn't seem like enough of a resolution change when 1440p, 1600p, and larger resolutions exist.

I don't think I'd go or a VA panel unless it was significantly less money, or the monitor had significantly better lag stats.

1 or 2 ms is really nothing.

ew @ the 1080p 27" one...$430 for a curved 1080p when you could get a name brand 1440p panel (or nearly two korean 1440p panels) for a similar price is unreasonable.

 

The 21:9 3440x1440 panel, however, is interesting. If it is reasonably priced ($600-750) and has VESA mounts I would seriously consider switching over to one.

on my lg34um95 it lags a little behind my qnix 27" direct DL-DVD drive 1440p monitor, but the LG did come with a bad controller or LCD (flickers and has artifacts) so I am getting it replaced. not sure if the lag may be due to bad controller.

Unless the 3440x1440 one is at least sub $800, this isn't really that interesting.

The ultrawide + curved display revolution is coming.  

 

Now if they would focus on backlight bleed - that's the biggest enemy of these formats.
