SSD+HDD or SSHD?

Im building my first pc and was wondering what would be a better investment. A hardrive and SSD or a single hybrid SSHD.

 

P.S When I have to install the Windows OS how would I install it so the OS is on the SSD Cache

SSD + HDD.

 

SSHDs have two points of failure and don't offer a whole lot of benefit over a regular SSD and HDD.

 

Also most SSHDs only have around 8GB of SSD space on them, which is nowhere near enough for an operating system, most operating systems now adays tend to sit at 15-30GB. (Except for linux, might be different for macs too)

256gb ssd is the sweet spot atm, along with 1tb hdd

i just got a 256gb MX100 for 112$, thats almost the amount i paid for my 120gb 840 non pro last year

256 is a very nice size for an SSD that will eventually get help from it's spinning mechanical father. I'd go with that.

Hey there AMDftw99,

 

Each type of drive has its benefits.

SSHD's take up only one slot on the MOBO and are great at deciding which programs you use the most and store some files on the small SSD part (usually 4, 8 or 16GB) for faster loading and performance. As the guys mentioned, if either part fails - you would lose everything on that drive and you lack the opportunity to decide what goes on the SSD part and what goes on the HDD part.

Separate SSD and HDD gives you the benefit to decide what to put on the faster drive so you can operate with it in a faster way and what to put on the massive storage HDD. It does provide you with redundancy as you have to separate independent drives and if one fails, the other would still function. They do take two slots and consume a bit more wattage and take up more physical space in the case.

 

I would recommend  250GB SSD (these fill up pretty quick) + HDD as this gives you more freedom to decide how to distribute your data and provides you with some redundancy in case of failure or drive change.

I could, easily. Of the available space on a 512gb drive I'd use a quarter of that just for my music library

Depends on the programs you use and if your a gamer, the OS alone can take up about 15-30gb and running games from ssd does enhance the experience.
