Computer Randomly Freezes!

Aunik

Like the title says, my computer randomly freezes and becomes unresponsive. I hold the power button down to shut it off than I turn it back on again. This happens once or twice a day and has only started recently. What could be causing this? What suggestions do you have for me to fix this problem?

Thanks

Check your driver updates and your installed programs that you installed since it started, and also check temps ^.

Hey Aunik,

As the guys suggested, I would check first what tare the temperatures in the case and if all fans and cooling is working properly. Are all your cables plugged in properly and all the way?

Also, do you have all the latest drivers, firmware updates and OS updates? I would check that too.

Also, you could do a run-in test from your BIOS to check your whole system for errors (processor, memory, storage drives, etc.)

I would also recommend checking your drive for errors or bad sectors. Your computer might be encountering a bad sector every once in a while and freezes while trying to read from it. I would run chkdsk /r just to make sure. You could also try WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic to check for bad sectors as well as the S.M.A.R.T. status . Run both the quick and the extended tests.

Hope this helps! Keep us updated on how this is going,

For my experience this is normally a hard drive issue. When the hard drive tries to read a bad block it freezes, you can use Hd Tune free to scan your drive and see if that works.

Well I ran the quick test and it passed but during the extended test my computer froze and was unresponsive when it hit sector 1949430015 out of 1953525167...

It sounds like it might be a corrupted sector on your hard drive.

I would try to back up as much as you can, remove the hard drive then try running your OS off your ssd for a couple days to see if it stops freezing. I would Def. check all power and sata connectors and keep a close eye on temps before even trying that. Good luck!!

Hey again,

As @DOOM4343 suggested, this looks like you have bad sectors on your drive. I would try and run chkdsk /r to try to recover anything from these sectors and then do an immediate backup and remove that drive. Check its warranty and if its eligible for RMA.
Try running the computer only on the SSD for several days and see if that happens again.

Great tool I use when I find a drive with bad sectors is on the Hirens Disc called Drive Regenerate. It goes sector by sector and repairs it. Great little tool.

Did you do a in-windows scan or a bootup scan? If it was in Windows - Still with the Hirens Disc, there is the WD Lifeguard tools on there and extended scan from that. Would say do it over night in case it does freeze, sometimes it will unfreeze after an hour or so.

I ran chkdsk /r and my computer froze after a while so I thought it landed on a bad sector so I turned it off and back on again. I ran it a second time, but this time I left it overnight and this morning it said that windows has checked the file system and found no problems. It also states that it has o KB in bad sectors. I'm wondering what this means; do I have a bad sector or not?
