Need desktop speakers under $100

madknight3

I live in Canada and I'm looking for some desktop speakers for my PC. Something good for the times I'm not in the mood for my headphones or when I'm watching something with my wife since we use the pc instead of a tv. Used for the usual stuff: movies, tv shows, music, and games.

I'd like to stay under $100 if possible, but I'll consider up to $150 if it's necessary and a big enough jump in quality. I don't have an amp so that may exclude some choices (unless the amp+speaker falls in budget).

From the below suggestions I like the sound of an amp+bookshelf speaker combo better than the 2 speaker + subwoofer combo. The subwoofer just takes up a lot of space.

Any recommendations?

I cheat slightly with this, I have a small 100 watt amp, its made by PYLE (dont have the product information with me, I am on a trip) and I use a couple ot "book shelf" style speakers with it, gives me alot of power for a small stereo. In the past I used a 2.1 speaker system from logitech, from my experience with these small computer systems is that most of the cheap ones ($40-80) tend to perform about the same really.

If you can go to an office store like staples/office max or electronics stores like bestbuy (not sure what you have in your area) you can try and demo them there :)

Worth a look for music use:

For gaming and movies, a typical 2.1 set is likely to fare better:

Can't believe I forgot to mention I live in Canada *facepalm*

Oh well, still lots of great suggestions that I can work with. I like the idea of going with an amp+bookshelf speakers. I'm not crazy about getting a 2 speaker + subwoofer setup. It'll just take up more room than I want but it's a fine backup plan

.

The Micca MB24X look nice but the only place I could find them had them at $118.

Bookshelf speakers and a lepai 2020A+ amp would be good. Stay away from Logitech and other peripheral companies.

I wonder if the Lepai 2020A+ Amp ($32.50) with these Pioneer SP-BS21-LR Bookshelf Speakers ($80) would be a good buy.

No worries man. Best of luck with your option.

You can also upgrade the amp's power supply with something like this:

http://www.amazon.ca/Universal-Notebook-Adapter-Voltage-Adjustment/dp/B00AEJZ02A

The stiffer power supply can result in better dynamics. When you need the output, you have the capability to switch to 15V (do this with the power supply unplugged, as you may fry the amp if you accidentally slide to the higher settings).
