nh-d14 vs nh-d15

chpoit

Hi guys,

I just got my Maximus VII hero and my G3258 to replace my currently dead mobo or CPU while I wait for broadwell.

The bad thing is it runs at 60C at idle, which probably is a precursor that I lost the silicon lottery.  I am a complete idiot who cannot mount a stock cooler that works with pins and not screws correctly.

Anyway, running it at 3.2ghz still is not an option for me, so, is the NH-D15 really worth the extra 20$ (99$) over the NH-D14 (79$) for a few degrees variation?

Also, canadian prices.

Thanks

P.S. I did not find anything covering the matter on the forums, if there is already, please direct me to it, thank you.

I would say no.

but if you plan on really pushing your next chip, then yes.

60c idle tells me you need to reapply thermal paste. Either used too much or not enough.

I now realize i'm a complete idiot and did not check whether or not the cooler was properly mounted. Now that all the 4 pins, and not only 2 are locked, I get a cool 22 C at idle, man, don't I feel like a retard...

And thanks helping for the answer.

The improvenments made from the nh-d14 to the 15 were mainly compatibility issues for tall ram modules and to compensate the lost fin space for the ram cutouts noctua widened the fin stacks so ist really only worth if you plan to use some sort of high profile ram.

So what if your ram is low profile?

In the UK, on amazon, there is a £17 difference with the D15 obviously being more expensive.

Is it worth paying £17 more?

How better is the cooling of the D15?

what about noise?

The main advantage of the NH-D15 is it's better RAM compatibility. RAM that's 64mm< will fit under the cut out in the outer heat sink and without you having to mount the outside fan higher. In terms of performance the NH-D15 gives about 3-5 degrees lower temp (enough to make it as good as the bigger AIO's out there like the X41 and X61).

In theory it should also be a bit quieter because the new heat sink design and slightly bigger fans are more efficient.

The nh-d15 also has noctuas newer fans the Nf-a15, and the wider fin stack gives it greater compatibility with high profile ram. However I don't think the price premium is justified over the nh-d14, unless u really need the extra preformance. From what I've seen both coolers stomp on 120 and 140 fan radiators, especially the d15, while being extremely quiet.

well for me I have both. the d14 one is a se2011 (didn't get those brackets) and the newer one i have is a d15.

both are really good. just that buying newer version of stuff is kinda mainstream.

doesn't matter if it's a locked or unlocked processor if yo uwant the d15 go get it.

I have a rig with a intel i5 locked and slapped a d15 there. it might not make sense to other people but I'm liking the look of tower coolers.

Live your life like a dream.
