Anyone know of some decent and relatively long range wireless adapters? The ethernet in my uni doesn't work with windows 8.1 It doesn't need to be fancy, just long range since my accommodation wifi is slow as hell, 0.3mbps  average with a max of 5mbps.

PC Specs: CPU: i7-4770K @ 4.5Ghz (Cooled by Corsair H100i) GPU: 780ti (RIP) Mobo: Asus Z87-A Storage: 2x Samsung 850 pro (128GB) seagate SSHD (2TB) PSU: Corsair RM 750 Case: Corsair Vengeance C70 Peripherals Keyboard: CM storm cherry blues Mouse: Razer deathadder

Our uni ethernet has problems connecting to windows 8.1 only through ethernet, I don't understand why, but that doesn't really matter, all that matters here is that I need a wifi adapter.

I honestly couldn't tell you, all I know is that it's enterprise wifi, it says 802.1X if that means anything to you.

Look at the router. It's written on its label. Probably written something like  a/g/b/n

I would, if i could find it. I believe here they built the routers into the walls or ceiling of each accommodation building.

What's the context here ? You're renting and the owner provides wifi ? You work for IT and want to equip computers with pcie adapters ? ...

Nono, I'm attending a university in England and I'm in student accommodation, where the only wifi available is offered by the university, I believe the company is called Janet or something. But I can use wifi on my laptop fine, but my desktop PC which I am collecting from home in a couple of weeks doesn't have on board wifi, so it would just be one system.

Well you could try running a machine (virtual or otherwise) using a different OS, connect that to ethernet and then share/bridge the connection to the windows 8.1 PC. I fail to understand what they could have done to cause problems specifically on 8.1 though...

Yes, it is odd, especially since my neighbour is running windows 7 and he connected almost instantly. But it's an issue that people are having all over the campus and the tech team don't seem to be able to do much about it. And although a virtual machine sounds like it would also work, the PCIe card sounds more inviting because there aren't many things that can go wrong with that.

Well there's not a lot that can do wrong with a VM, and best of all it'd be free. PCIe might prove to be crappy seeing as you'll be surrounded by loads of different networks I expect and u could be miles from your router.

Not miles away from the router, this is what annoys me about LTT forums, I asked if anyone could recommend a long range wireless adapter because I know that will work, I even specified a PCIe adapter in the title but everyone is trying to get me to do different things. I'm sorry, but I don't want to do a virtual machine, it might work for you, but I have no idea how it will work with the uni wifi, I was looking at the Edimax N600 Wireless Dual-Band (300Mbpsx2) PCI Express Adaptor.
