Is it worth it to upgrade a Z77 motherboard to an SLI model in 2014?

Hi guys, here's my predicament :

I'm currently on a Z77 based system from 2012 and I'm running a single GTX 670 on my Gigabyte Z77-DS3H Motherboard.

But I would like to upgrade to a 4K monitor from my old 1680x1050 Apple Cinema Display which requires quite a bit more oumph in terms of GPU horsepower. So I want to go from single 670 to Dual GTX 970's in SLI. Problem is my motherboard was one of those budget Z77 models that only supported Crossfire on a 16x/4x bandwidth.

So since I'm not ready to invest in a platform upgrade just yet, it's only been 2 years, is it worth spending ~€100 on the Z77X-UD3H just to gain SLI support if I wish to go 4K/1440p G-Sync ?

Thanks !

That motherboard operates at x16 & x8 when in SLI so the cards should be fine on that motherboard

That is entirely up to you, I'll be getting my second 780 tomorrow and will game on it for awhile. Personally I would probably use what I have, but it all depends on if you want to spend the extra money for a cpu + motherboard + ram (potentially)

So stick with 670 or go up to just one 970 for now ?
