Upgrading Hard Drives

Gavin Marx

Hello peoples, I have been looking to replace my Hard Drive as it is just about full and I am going for another HDD just for the financial side.

I'm just wondering if I were to replace my old 500 GB Seagate Hard Drive to a new 1 TB Seagate, would make a noticeable difference in speed for my PC games.

If you have any knowledge behind me question, please write below. Thanks. ^^

You wouldn't see a noticeable improvement in speed (I assume loading speed) unless the one you have is a very old drive. Performance wouldn't be impacted at all. 3TB drives are the best capacity per dollar nowadays btw

It wont really be noticable no, If you are wanting to know how to transfer your data from one drive to another, use a live cd/usb of Clonezilla.

The only speed up you might get (depending on how old the 500 gig drive is) will be from loading the game, but it won't be all that noticeable, and you certainly won't get an FPS bump.

Hello there Gavin Marx,

As the guys pointed out, games rely on storage only for loading times. You shouldn't see any difference in FPS or graphics (except the game needs to load a huge texture file or you have an in-game load screen). What games are do you usually play?

As @Vedge suggested, 2TB and 3TB drives have the best GB/$ ratio nowadays.

If you are looking for simple and reliable 1TB drive, I would suggest WD Blue: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=770

For higher capacities and better performance you could check WD Black series: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760

You could use Acronis to migrate or clone your old drive on your new one or just use both drives as a simple JBOD.

Hope this helps,

Captain_WD.

Thank you guys so much. And yes Captain_WD, I am going for the WD 1TB Blue HDD only because I'm from South Africa and my budget is quite low. I have also see recently my computer is slow at times, especially at start up. Much appreciated and soon I'm able to purchase the new HDD. ^^

Hey, you are welcome!

You can run a disk check to see if the slow problem comes from the drive itself. Each manufacturer has their own recommended tool which you can find on their website (Like WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool for Western Digital drives). You can also run a chkdsk /r from the CMD.
