I keep getting an error message when I plug in an external USB HD. (Windows 7)

I have a Western Digital 1.5 TB USB 2.0 hard drive from 3-4 years ago that's had this problem for a long time. I also have a 2 TB version of the same model that I got the next year. I only get this error message on the 1.5 TB, never the 2.0. I've read that removing the drive before ejecting can cause it, which I used to do all the time until this started to happen. Here's what the error message looks like. http://cdn8.howtogee....IuuP1B44ys.png

Years ago I tried "scan and fix" which is recommended, but it caused a memory leak in Windows 7 and I never tried it again. Considering that I'm using Windows 7, that I've gotten a system memory leak before while doing a scan for this, what is the best way to resolve this issue. I don't want this message to pop up, but I don't know for sure if it's a false positive for something wrong with the drive.

I've seen articles about this problem like here : http://www.howtogeek...hould-i-let-it/

They mention nothing about getting a memory leak in Windows 7 during the scan.

EDIT

I ran a disk check in the command line for the external HD and saw RAM usage skyrocket by over 3GB in about 2-3 minutes.

And what was the conclusion of the disk check?

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

Hey @EdwardERS.  It's always recommended to safely remove your drive, because there's a slight risk of getting a file corrupted, which on its own may corrupt a whole partition. Fortunately in your case, there's only the annoying message, which should be prevented if you eject the HDD first. If there was nothing out of the ordinary after you did the scan, but you still want to make sure everything's OK, I'd recommend that you download Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and run both quick and extended tests. Here's a link for DLG: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

And what was the conclusion of the disk check?

It took 12 hours. It said there was some problems and that files would be moved to a folder named "Found". No such folder was created. IDK, but it took 12 hours, it ran in safe mode and my system ram usage was at 15.7GB for all of that 12 hours except the first 5-10 minutes.

I don't get the error message when I plug it in now, so... success?

Well I guess so. Hopefully everything is OK with the drive from now on. Just remember to safely remove the drive every time before you disconnect it from your computer. It's not as pointless as most people think.
