Python. This year were starting C++ in school for the senior course.

Python is definitely way better for beginning programming.

Java has been my main language for the past 7 years since thats what all of the companies I've worked for have used. I'm kinda feeling like I need a change of language though as 7 years is a long time in one language..

Depends, but I use a lot of C# and Actionscript 3.

Depends on the job. For small stuff I often use BASH, for larger

stuff my main multi-purpose language these days is Perl. When a

compiled language is called for, I prefer C since it's both a

pretty simple language and yet still very powerful. When necessary,

I also use C++, but I tend to avoid it if possible. I avoid Java

whenever I can, but sometimes there is sadly no way around it.

Oh, and PHP for web stuff usually. It's not what I'd call a great

language from a conceptual point of view, but it allows quick

results without too much hassle, which is often more important

than coding purity/philosophy etc.

On my to-learn list I currently have FORTRAN, Haskell, Go and

Python. I have one big personal project on my TODO list in the

foreseeable future, but I haven't yet decided what language to

use for that. It'll likely need a GUI, and it'll need to be

cross-platform, so a big part of my decision will end up being

based on how easy/difficult it is to achieve the desired result

with whatever technology I end up chosing. Much more research

is required before being able to make an informed decision though.

Mostly Bash and Python but I'm trying to learn C and some C++ so I have a more well rounded knowledge. I believe my computer science program will have me on Java next year which isn't exactly ideal but I'll have to get over it.

Oh man, I really hope I don't get a job/jobs that make me use the same language all the time. I need one the juggles languages between projects. No fun beeing stuck on one d:

Its not so bad if you have a lot of different things you get to work on. Its only been pretty recent that I've been getting bored with Java. I have had the chance to work on online banking software, interfacing with cash dispensers, building a loyalty system that handles several thousand transactions an hour, forecasting software for estimating and alerting on when fuel tanks at gas stations are going to run out based on previous sales, and dealing with an api that does satellite communication with truck drivers in the past few years. Using one language across a lot of different types of projects is a bit less stressful than one project with lots of languages I've found.

Cool.

Well, I still think it is better that you atleast not have more than two projects in a row using same language. Need some change in working environment (or something like that)

You'll most definitely be hired to program in only one language. How is someone supposed to become really good in a specific enviroment/IDE if they don't spend a lot of time practicing it?

Don't hate the programming language, hate the profession you chose.

I use Python and am trying to learn Haskell and C. Loving Haskell so far and hating C.

Ha, Haskell. Watch this video:

I had to learn it in my first year in uni. Bear in mind Simon Peyton Jones created this language.

Java as goto, but but if you know a couple of languages you can almost code in anything (except for assembler and brainfuck :P). I also love the "low levelness" of assembler but its very impractical to use in a lot of cases.

The only language I have ever used for a long time is the arma 2 coding language for making custom scripts. witch has close similarity's to C/C++. I think I would be able to do more advance things but at this moment I don't have the time or the patience
