External 500GB SSD

Greetings everyone,

I've 128GB USB 3.0 flash drive for year and it's pretty amazing. I wanted something in larger size but the price is extereme and performence is bad.

I've seen Angelbird SSD2go Pocket - Extremely Portable SSD and I start thinking that I can buy something like this.

So I decide to make it smaller than SSD2go for my travel needs.

So I used external Sabrent USB 3.0 mSATA and Samsung 840 EVO 500GB

Performence is bad on this mSATA to USB 3.0 but I also count in it bottleneck - mSATA III  6Gb -> USB 3.0 5Gb.

Benchmark

For me it¨s small (5×10×1 cm) 500GB fast external memory/SSD for travel.

What is your opinion, would you buy something like this or it's overkill?

While I totally see how small factor large storage is important, I personally would never spend the money on it.

If I needed that much storage, I'd just go up to a 2.5" drive which is still quite small and use that instead.

Honestly, if they were small files, I'd probably be more inclined just to buy 2 256gb sticks.

A bit overkill imo. I'd go only like 128 Gb or maybe 256. For more storage, traditional 2.5 inch HDD is fine.

If you want smaller device for example 128GB - I've best experience with USB 3.0 flash drive Kingston DataTraveler HyperX 128GB.

Problem with 2.5" HDD is you've to be careful for you external HDD and don't drop it or throw you back hard on ground.

256GB flash drive cost over 180€ and performence is lower than this solution, 512GB flash drive is only Kingston DataTraveler HyperX Predator 512GB and it's pretty slow and overkille - 400€

But still I can unplug this drive and take it inside to my laptop if I'd have changed my mind.

Oh I see then. You do want to install it inside the laptop if necessary

I'm saying that I can do it but since that I've 2× 1TB SSD inside it's not necessary. I'm little disappointed from speeds in 4k but still better than USB 3.0 flash drive and definitely faster than any 2.5" HDD.

I agree that you have to be careful, but if you're looking at a strict cost point it makes sense. Most bags come with padded or more secure pockets for such things; surely if you're spending this kind of money on a portable storage solution you also have a bag that matches, or at least you should.

I've had several HDD based drives, one even a desktop drive, that have traveled around the country with me and none of them have ever had an issue.

Yeah, they're definitely slower. But honestly, not slow enough to warrant the cost of an SSD, with the huge loss of data capacity.

Thats just awsome

Thanks dawg ;-)

I had from WD three external 2.5" HDD drives each had 500GB and they died after 3-6 months. And yes I¨ve great bags, I've two from Samsonite and one from Crumpler. After that I bought Patriot Supersonic Magnum 128GB and it was fantastic but after 10 months it died. It died when I needed to copy my big project so it was quite funny. Anyway later then I bought Corsair Voyager GS 128GB and no joke, it was dead already when I first plugged it, so I was angry and bought Kingston DataTraveler HyperX 128GB and this one is just great.

Why 500GB external SSD?
First, since I use SSD daily I'm used to it and I don't like lower speeds and performance on HDD. Flash drive is great but I have lots of important stuff and I can't borrow it to someone, so my personal and work stuff goes to this drive and share alike stuff I can save on flash drive.
