AOC U3477PQU Review [Big pictures]

Volbet

I'll start off by saying that i'm not really used to makeing posts, so this might end horribly.
I'm also sorry about the bad lighting in the pictures. My office isn't the greatest place to take pictures.

Before we start

What is the AOC U3477PQU?
It's a 34" (86,72cm) computer monitor with a 3440x1440 resolution, in a 21:9 aspect ratio. It uses the same LG panel as the

. However I would argue that it has a better stand, but I'll get back to that.

Why did I get this monitor?
Due to some rearranging of my home office, I no was no longer able to fit my regular dual 1080P monitor setup, along with my 2560x1080 work monitor.
So to save on desk space, I decided to get the AOC U3477PQU and just use the same monitor for my day-to-day computer and my work computer.
I also love games, so I was looking forward to seeing how games would look in it.

Edit: I have only had the monitor since Tuesday, so I might miss something.

The box is nothing special. It contains the basic information about the monitor, as is to be expected.

SQtljPn.jpg

Unfortunatly, I don't have a picture of the accessory pack, but this is what was included:
  • 2m (6ft) Displayport cable
  • 2m (6ft) Dual link DVI cable
  • 2m (6ft) VGA cable (becuase why the fuck not)
  • 2m (6ft) USB 3.0 A to B cable, for the build in hub
  • A CD with the manuel and software
  • A 15cm x 10cm microfibre cloth.
  • A 34" monitor with a stand.

Overall I'm very satisfied with the accessory pack.I certainly wasn't expecting a Displayport cable.

The monitor looks really nice. I know looks are a very subjective thing, but I think it's a good idea to atleast touch upon it.
The screen has a very iMac-ish look, with no bulging bezels, except at the bottom.

0kkwA2e.jpg

The bezel is 1,4cm wide if anyone cares about that.
The monitor also support a 100mm x 100mm VESA mount, and I am thinking about getting a monitor arm in the future.

zZ5lJTq.jpg

The back of the monitor might look like brushed metal, but it's just plastic made to look that way. I don't personally have a problem with this, but some people might.
As for inputs, the monitor supports DVI, HDMI, VGA(?) and Displayport. It also has a audio jack passthrough for your speakers/headphones.

XGAOlfm.jpg

The monitor also have two 3W stereo speaker, and they sound exactly like you would expect. They are absolutely terrible. They sound like they are playing inside an old metal bucket.

The stand is really nice. It supports hight adjust (from 7,6cm to 25cm above the desk), tilt(-5° to 23°), swivel and 90° pivot.

WHtpUmy.jpg

The foot of the stand is a really nice brushed metal. it feels really solid, but it is also quite heavy.
It is also a fingerprint magnet, so keep your hands away.
There is also a cable management ´clip´ on the back of the stand. However, it can't be locked to the stand, so it's pretty useless. Cables keep falling out of the clip, so I have given up using it.

Since I can't really take a picture of the image quality, I'll just comment on it.
Coming from a 27" 1080P TN panel, this is a hugh improvement. The colours are sharp and the viewing angles are much better.
The sRGB support is also great.
I also have so much desktop realestate now.

tnE5kXM.jpg

There is a little bit of backlight bleed in the corners, but unless you look for it, you won't notice.

Now, gaming was one the things that I was looking forward to, but it I was also worried about the amount of games that would support this resolution.
My fear about the game support was quickly removed. Most modern (and even some old) games does support the 3440 x 1440 resolution. And the games that doesn't have native support (like Skyrim), can be forced via console commands or a quick edit in a .ini file.
Just for fun I did a 1920x1080 vs. 3440x1440 game compersions, because as we all know, resolution is just a number.

Feel free to request a game, that I should do a comparison of. If I have the game, I will do it.

Screen menues.
The screen menu does offer a big varity of options, but it does feel a bit clumsy.
For example, when you have to chose the input source, you have to press the source button (pretty logical), but when you want to select the input, the up and down buttons does jack. You have to press the source button again, to switch input (in my opninion pretty illogical)
It also offers picture in picture mode, where you can have two inputs shown at the same time. I don't really know how I would use it, but atleast the option is there.

Accessory software
Software on the disk

  • Display driver (never saw the point of these)
  • i-menu
  • e-Saver
  • Screen+

i-menu
This is a windows version of the screen menu, although it is a bit gimped. It is handy when you just want to adjust the screen brightness on the fly, without the need to reach for the monitor.
e-Saver
This is essentially a piece of software, that allows you to set a sleep schedule for your computer. It's basically the same as Windows' power options, but a bit more user friendly.
Screen+
This allows you to seperate the screen into smaller spaces than Windows usually allows for. This will allow you to "maximize" windows, but only have them take up part of the screen. You could seperate the screen into 3 vertical spaces, 3 horizontal paces, 4 squares or 6 squares. There are also a bunch of combinations of these options.
However, Screen+ doesn't support 64bit applications, so it won't work with Chrome and some of my other frequently used software. Therefor I don't really have a big need for the software.

Getting wallpapers for this screen is a bit difficult. The pictures I could find on Google was either from games I hadn't played, or of scantily clad women. So I just settled for the Metro wallpaper that was in the screenshot.
You can take a 4K picture and downscale it, but it ends up looking a bit warped.

The screen does have a 4 port USB hub (two 3.0 ports and two 2.0 ports), but why it's on the side of the monitor is beyond me. Since the monitor is as wide as it is, it's pretty hard to reach around the side. The cable for the hub also plug into the side, and not with into the same place as all the other cables.

I did try to overclock the monitor, but I was only able to get it from 60Hz to 70Hz, so not that much of a gain.
post-5244-0-64788200-1411820795.png

Conclusion
Overall I really like the monitor. The colours are sharp, and the resolution is just right for me. The design is also quite good in my opinion, but it might not be for everyone.
The software that comes with the monitor is pretty useless to me, but it might be usefull to other people.
The only really negative thing is the cable clip on the stand. It's completly useless, and it should have been done better.
The speakers are also pretty terrible, but I should probably see them as addons rather than a full feature.
The monitor is also pretty big, so it might not fit on some peoples desks.
It doesn't have the Thunderbolt support of the LG 34UM95, but I don't really care for Thunderbolt. However, if you do, this might not be the monitor for you.

Feel free to ask any and all questions about the monitor. I have probably missed something important.

Edit:

Thanks to @SpittingLlama for adding some comparison charts. They can be seen in his post:

It is modded a bit, but I never got into modding it to kingdom come with graphics mods.

I had way to many performance problems.

I'm glad you liked the review.

Does 1080p centre? i really want a 21-9 monitor

It depends on the game. Some games (like Diablo III) centers, but most games I tested stretch the 1080P image to fit the monitor.

Edit: 1080P, 1440P and 4K content on Youtube is also centered.

What's the price for this beauty?

I payed around 1000$ (or 800€) for it, but prices in Denmark are pretty high when compared to other countries.

I haven't been able to find prices in any other country.

When i do, I'll edit them into the post.

I don't know if I just got my monitor early, but that would explain the lack of listining anywhere else.

Excellent review! Really, it's very well done. Loved the amount of pictures that you included.

This is the monitor I've been waiting for and it looks like it'll be just as good a I figured.

I did have a few questions though;

Did you run across any more programs you couldn't run in split screen mode? I find it odd that it won't run 64bit applications like that. Mostly concerned about browsers.

Can you split it so that there's just 2 screens?

How did you find the gaming? Was it noticeably worse than say a TN panel?

Did you actually notice a great deal of improvement graphics wise?

  1. It isn't that I can't run programs in split screen mode. It was just that I couldn't use the Screen+ software to do it for me (atleast with 64bit applications). Since I've had a little time to play around today, i have manually sperated different programs to tale up different spaces. See the screenshot at the buttom of this post for an example. I'm not sure I understand when you say "Can you split it so that there's just 2 screens?". If you mean if i can sperate the screen into two equally sized windows, I can. i have just used Windows Aero Snap for that.
  2. Gaming was completly fine. I did notice some stutter, but I think that is more due to my graphics card being a bit old by now. Even with the lower refresh rate and higher response time, I still did well in games such as CoD Black Ops II and CS 1.6.
  3. Yes. Especially in newer games such as Metro: Last Light, Crysis 3, Tomb Raider 2013 and Batman Arkham Origins. They all had a noticable improvment in graphical detail. I think this is a combination of the higher resolution and the better coulours. Another great thing, is that the FOV in those games are improved. I sometimes suffer a lot from motion sickness, and this monitor has helped that.

Thank you for the nice words. I I really hope other people will find the review helfull aswell.

I was more interested in being able to split it into two, and having each side act as an independant display...so when I would full size a window, it would fill only that portion of the screen.

(I'm definitely not the best at describing things!)

Does Windows Aero automatically do that? Or does it involve a lot of fuffing around?

Good to hear about the games, that's definitely was one of the biggest concerns for me! I'm by no means a competitive gamer, but I do like visuals and I'd find excessive ghosting and such to be a real piss off.

Now I follow, No, Windows Aero can't do that. However, I know Display Fusion has the ability to do that, and it should support 64bit applications aswell. I was thinking of picking it up the next time its on sale on Steam.

The only game I've had some problems with is the original Crysis, but I think that is just becuase it's an old game. it would be capped at 30 FPS and it would tear like crazy.

How much does it cost? cant seem to find it in the US

Neither can I. I have looked litteraly everywhere.

I was originally going post links to various stores, but I couldn't find any store that carries it, other than two Scandinavian stores.

I payed around 1000$ for it, but the prices in Denmark are quite a bit higher than the prices in the US.

ah ok, so its still just an upgrade stand 34um95 and not a better price point :( I wonder if the prices of these monitors will lower when the 34uc97 comes available for consumers or if the 34uc97 will just cost a lot more

The problem is that these high resolution 21:9 monitors are vey niche. They can pretty much set the price as they want.

However, the price for the LG 34UM95 is about 10% higher than the AOC U3477PQU in Denmark, so one can hope that the price difference will carry over to the US.

Uhm, from a Dutch video I've heard them saying you just have to connect your monitor with two different cables to your GPU and press a button.

As far as I'm understanding you have two things; 1) Auto split screen thing looks like "software" 2) Dual-link thing (letting the gpu realize there are two monitors)

@Op is this monitor factory calibrated and where did you buy it from? Nice review by the way

As far as I'm understanding you have two things; 1) Auto split screen thing looks like "software" 2) Dual-link thing (letting the gpu realize there are two monitors)

@Op is this monitor factory calibrated and where did you buy it from? Nice review by the way

The Screen Splitter software is what I'm after.

I know the LG has it for sure, but the OP makes it sound like this one doesn't have the same kind of options. Which makes sense seeing as it's a different companies software.

Seems like it'd be a pretty important thing to miss though.

The software part, that automatically arranges your windows is like this -> at 1:44 youtube.com/watch?v=sFDb_UIZJ6g

It's software that you install, clicking on it and you have options, it will automatically arrange the windows for you.

But I assume you werent interested in this? At 2:05 they show the dual-link feature, which basically turns the monitor in two monitors exactly functioning like two physical monitors. The AOC has the same feature, http://www.aoc-ap.com/root/upload_files/brochure/U3477PQU/U3477PQU.pdf scroll down to picture to picture, picture by picture.

Great pictures for games. I wanted this monitor but not sure anymore. All your pics in 1440 display hud a lot smaller and objects a lot further and smaller

:-(

Is it really the case ? Hud seem harder to read in 1440p.

I now have a 1920x1200 Samsung 275t.

thank you

The HUD does get smaller in 1440P, but most games does allow you to scale the HUD to a bigger size. I just personally don't like to do that, since they often time end up looking like crap.

As for the smaller objects. It does seem like that, but when you play the games you won't notice it. The effect is also more noticable, becuase I use a very large FOV.

And welcome to the forum.

It is not factory calibrated as far as I can tell. I am going to get my hands on a ColorMonki, and see how much calibration it needs out of the box.

I got the monitor from the Scandinavian eTailer Komplett, but it's also sold by the Danish eTailer Dustin.

I'm glad you enjoyed the review.

I'm sorry about the late reply guys, but a man have to sleep some time.

Is this monitor only going to be released in the EU? If not, I think I've found my next monitor!
