Combine SSD?

frostentangle

Sorry for the lack of the correct term.

I have a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD and it only has 22GB space left. I want to add more space by buying another SSD but I don't want the hassle of reinstalling OS and programs. Is there a way I could join the SSDs space? or is it a bad idea and I should just take the new SSD as a separate drive and just specify large program installs on the new SSD?

Thanks!

Yeah, you can use RAID 0, but it is kind of unstable. Then again I never tried it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels

I'd say just do raid 0, but that's if you don't have info on the drive you need.

You can use raid 0, but keep in mind this means if one ssd goes bad, all the data across both SSDs will be lost or unusable.

IIRC both drives have to be free of any data. Which would defeat the whole purpose as he doesn't want the hassle of reinstalling everything.

@OP, I'd just go ahead and get another drive, and run the programs off it. The only difference is there's another letter, and you don't have to worry about RAID drivers or any of that stuff.

Yeah that's what the shopkeeper told me too. I now know the rist but is it really that unstable? or is it just a matter of precaution?

Yeah I think that'd be the easiest. It would still be fast since its on SSD.

This problem arouse because of BF4, the game ate at least 35GB of my 128GB SSD and I'm still at 2 out of 5 expansion packs. LOL

Haha, yes. 3 also ate up most of my SSD when I had it installed.

I didn't find it that fun though so it didn't stay on there for long.

I forgot to mention you will have to reinstall everything that was on the ssd (OS,...)

The SSD won't be more likely to die in a raid 0. But the fact that theres two of them and if one dies, you lose everything on both ssds is why you call it 'unstable'.

I guess we will have to wait for a specialized 'red' SSDs more capable for raids.

With your PC setup it looks like you're not short of a bob or two so why don't you buy 2 Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSDs and Raid 0 them both and never have to worry about storage again!
