2 portrait monitors to surround Asus PB287Q 4k

cthomas1489

I'm used to using multiple monitors but have always had them landscape side by side. Moving to the Asus 4k I'm looking for two monitors to add on each side in portrait mode (have never had monitors that way before).

The computer is used for gaming, productivity, web dev and game programming / general programming. I figure I'll do my gaming on the 4k but have the two other's to have other things up as well. Since the 4k monitor isn't IPS or 120/144hz neither do the side monitors.

I'm unsure which ones will asethically match up well though and thus want advice. I won't be using a mount so they'll need pivot and sticking with Asus / similar bezal would be preferred, but would definitely look at other options. Resolution will be 1080p most likely. Should I be looking at 24"? I don't want the monitors to be too tall next to the 28".

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860K @ 4.5GHz  |  Cooler: CM Hyper 212 EVO  |  Mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty FM2A88X+ Killer

GPU: Asus R9 280X  |  PSU: Corsair HX850  |  RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 120GB  |  HDD: Seagate 1TB 7200rpm  |  CASE: Fractal Design R4 Blackout

ASUS PB238Q?

It's 23" and is only around 100mm wider than the PB287Q is tall. 1080p, IPS, same bezel & such.

Exactly what I was looking for thanks! Given that the PB287Q is TN and these are IPS... will I noticed a drastic color difference among my spread out work space?

I doubt it will be drastic. Like Linus said in his review of the PB287Q (IIRC), this TN panel is almost as good as an IPS panel. Since they are both coming from ASUS, it might be slightly noticeable, but I imagine it won't be all that bad.

Alright. I think I'll end up giving that combo a shot then.

You could post a pic of the setup once you've got them (but no pressure ;))? It'd be interesting to see. :)

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

Awesome. I was going to do this as well. Not sure if with the PB287Q or another IPS 4K monitor. I'm on the PB238Q right now and that was my upgrade path. This will be useful info :D

Indeed.

I'm pretty sure that the PB238Qs will destroy the PB278Q as far as color is concerned seeing as they are Pro Art Displays.

Desktop -  i5 4670k, GTX 770, Maximums VI Hero, 2X Kingston Hyper X 3k in raid zero.

Laptop - Lenovo X230 Intel 535 480GB, 16GB Gskill memory, Classic Keyboard Mod, Triple USB 3.0 Express Card.

Just a thing: It's the PB287Q. The 4K one. Not the PB278Q, the 27" 1080p monitor.

Fucking asus. all you have to 2 is swap 2 numbers and the product is completely different. Also it is 27 inch 1440p IPS display. Point still stands though. It's an High end IPS display vs High end TN.

My bad.

Tom's Hardware color test on the PB287Q

I wish they had a PB238Q test to compare it to. Apparently in Standard mode, the PB287Q is pretty great at color reproduction. Probably not IPS great, but close enough that it won't be bothersome.

It's the worst modeling scheme.

Yeah I specifically want that comparison too. I don't think it'll be too drastic but I'm gonna see if Microcenter has both on display and if we can move them next to each other.
