File Associations

atlasgamer777

Long story short I ended up with some corrupt files in windows 8 and upgraded to windows 8.1, which fixed the files. Now Im having a problem with opening files. I cannot open any word or excel type file because (according to my pc) I don't have a program to open that type of file. can someone give me step by step instructions on how to set up a new association so I can open up Microsoft files.

Actually all of the word documents fixed themselves. but now any excel spreadsheet I have wont open because excel wont show up to choose as a program to open with. Also that didn't work. Right click file>click properties>then there is a spot where you can click to change it. but thanks for the help. @scaryjam823

When you click choose default program, then click browse. Find the .exe that is suppose to open excel and choose that. The easiest way is on the shortcut you have to the application, right click. Then click open file location. Look at the top for the address of the .exe location. Browse to that location in the default program window and double click the .exe, Then the program will show in the default programs list.

@scaryjam823 still couldn't find it. I think it got corrupted with other files.

Depending on your version of office, the excel executable should be located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office <number>\root\office<number>\EXCEL.EXE, so you should be able to open it with that as described above.
