Microsoft unveils Their Chromecast - Works with Windows and Android

GoodBytes

Today, Microsoft is unveiling their Wireless Display Adapter.

This device is similar to the Googles Chromecast in terms of how you plug it in, and how it looks.

However it doesn't work exactly the same way.

Unlike Chormecast, the device shares your entire screen, and doesn't need a web browser.

However, you can have Netflix playing on the TV (as example), and you can do something else on the computer while it continues to play NetFlix on the TV. So it is more versatile in that fashion. As it broadcast the entire screen to it, iut means yu can play any videos of your liking, you are not limited to videos from the web like you are with Chromecast.

Dell Venue 8 Pro is used. It has a 1280 x 800 resolution. We can see the scaling is pretty good.

In addition to Windows, and Andoird support, it also support Windows Phones as well:

In other for the technology to work, you need a Miracast compatible device

Details on specification aren't available, but it looks like it is more powerful than Google Chromecast, as it seams to properly share the entire screen properly. Lag and resolution is not known yet, we have to wait for reviews.

Personally, I was VERY disappointed in the Chromecast, as text was simply hard to read, and desktop sharing was a slide show. I would not mind to pay more and get something that is more powerful. Hopefully this one delivers.

The Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter is available this October, in the U.S and Canada, expect to find at Best Buy, and Microsoft Store online and offline. The price is $59.99 U.S and Canada.

While it is a bit more expensive than Google solution, I say for 30$ more, if it means more abilities, and not forced to use Chrome web browser and slow app starting for youtube and not tricky to use, and text is more readable, I say it's worth the premium.

You can pre-order yours here: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/productID.308216600

Update:

And it supports 1080p.

And apparently it has very low latency if you are 23 feet and under from the device.

Nice! I can probably expect to pay anywhere from $80 - $100 AUD here in Australia for that unfortunately.

I may buy one in a few months, it looks pretty good.

And to the people that will inevitably say that it costs more than Chromecast and does the exact same thing, reread the OP and the article.

Yep, a lackluster experience which is fine when you want to watch Netflix from a phone but if you want to stream your tab or OS, it stutters like a beotch. I try to do this every now and then, and even with my 60/60 (peak) internet, I can't manage smoothness.

it works pretty different that the chromecast, to they point ill say they are hard to compare, chromecast cast info from the internet and requires developer support, this is literally just a wirelles display adapter like the name suggest

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

Yes, I have had a Chromecast for months now. That's the experience I just described.

I like that is using Miracast, so I have compatibility with my HTC One, Nexus 7, my desktop PC and all of the other stuff in my house (sans iOS devices.) I may just give the CC to my sister and buy one of these.
