It's probably because of the gpu. Since you wouldn't be taking advantage of the gpu at that resolution. And 1080p should be the minimum for pc gaming imo.

I also don't see the necessary of changing monitor

I know some people prefer that aspect ratio

I upgraded from 1024x768 to 1920x1080 .. night and day difference.

No, you dont have to change monitor if you dont wish so but I would reconsider. I am now thinking about getting one of those 21:9 1440p.

1080P looks great. The whole you have a better GPU so you need a better monitor argument is silly. If you want to push your current monitor with a 270X, go ahead and ball out.

I'd even push a 1080P monitor with a GTX 980 or 780(ti). Nobody can tell you what you need to do with your money, your hardware.

Games look so much more normal (less stretched out vertically) and some (like Euro Truck Simulator 2) only work in widescreen resolutions.

It's just odd to most people that someone doesn't want to upgrade to what's considered standard these days. I'm sure you don't think it would improve your gaming experience or anything but trust me it will improve it massively. If you're able to you should find someone that has one and ask them if you can try it out, people wouldn't suggest it if it wasn't worth it. In the end the decision is obviously yours but you should give it a spin I promise that you won't be disappointed. That being said if you get a 270x it will drive almost anything at maximum settings on that monitor but lower settings on a 1080p display would still look better.

The wider the better. I can't go back to 16:9. I went with a 2560x1080 ips over what could have been 1440p display or a 144hz display. Ultra wide beats the rest in my opinion. Hell I would love to one day see something like a 27:9 With a curved screen triple monitor gaming would become irrelevant. Luckily I don't think we are too far from that. Given lg's new curved 21:9 panel. Just move to 16:9. Im sure you will like it.

Firstly that GPU is designed to be ran at 1080p and medium to high (not ultra) presets. Not to do so means you're wasting money on performance that you're deliberately not using. That's why people would say that you'd "need" a 1080p.

Why you'd want a 1080p (or higher) monitor should be obvious if you care about an immersive, cinematic experience. And if you're "happy" with a mediocre gaming experience, why would you bother upgrading your GPU?

I had the same res until I added an extra 1080p screen. Honestly, if all you ever do is office work and gaming, and only ever one thing at a time you won't need the extra screen real estate. But you can do so much more at once if you have more. For anything art-related though, it's almost required to have at least 1080p. Trust me, it'll increase your productivity a lot.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

Technically it would but if the OP isn't planning on upgrading their monitor for the foreseeable future then getting an OP GPU for his monitor would be a sound investment as it wouldn't need to be that powerful and would be able to drive games at that resolution at very high settings for quite some time. While a lower end GPU makes sense because it would be a better fit now it wouldn't make sense in the long run as it's ability to play games would diminish faster than something like a R9 270 would even at that low resolution.

I thought that getting a 23" monitor after selling my 15" laptop would be a waste too, but god damn the improvement is massive. I can finally multitask properly.

You need more than an R7 240 or GT 730 for decent graphics even at 1280x1024.

I do understand that argument. I've made it before for people whose budget easily extended to a GTX 780 even though they were only interested in 1080p. But that's because 1440p is relatively expensive and 1080p is the standard at the moment and will be until 4K is a viable solution with a single high end GPU.

1080p monitors aren't even expensive any more. You can get an IPS for less than the price of a 270X so it just seems like OP is keeping antiquated kit for its own sake. I consider a GPU upgrade about increasing graphical fidelity, about improving the general gaming experience. I find it a dissonance to care enough about a GPU which can produce that, but not bother with a monitor that can.

You need more than an R7 240 or GT 730 for decent graphics even at 1280x1024.

R7 260 or something then. Or Integrated or APU. It doesn't matter. The 270X seems overkill is all.

I think I may be considered a taboo among the LTT community. I game on a  42" 1366x768 monitor with R9 270x crossfired. I am thinking about downsampling it to 1440p so at least there is that.

Once you go to 1080p anything less looks terrible, IMO 1080p should be viewed as a minimum resolution these days especially with the prices you can get them for. However 1280x1024 is very 90's if your into the retro thing ;P
