EVGA could lose out on quite a bit of money due to trying to cut costs in putting together GTX 970/980 cards

EVGA may have used a cooler from a bigger card to save on manufacturing costs.

With this news will you be buying EVGA?  Will you be looking to RMA your card if you already have one?

EVGA has yet to comment on the matter btw.

This looks just like what Asus did with the DCUII Hawaii cards.

Honestly, the new GM204 chips don't seem to need such huge coolers on them anyway. I was surprised not to see any short/mITX 970's on release because they had them right away with the 285 and the 970 is even lower TDP.

I doubt it will become a huge issue for these cards, but it would most certainly steer me away from ACX if I was in the market for a 970.

Good thing Newegg didn't process my payment 9 times in a row... almost spent $700 on SLI'ed 970 EVGAs.

Holy crap! That would've sucked. :o

The Zotac GTX 970 on newegg is pretty damn small, to me it loosk like an short ITX card.

It isn't a manufacturing defect more than it is a poor implementation.
I've recommended to many to avoid buying the ACX 970s from EVGA because of the sub par thermals and acoustics. It was obvious that this was a cost cutting move on EVGA's part. By simply reusing the heatsink from the GTX 760 series they can cut a whole lot of R&D and manufacturing cost associated with designing and building new coolers for the GTX 970.

If they sale the "bad ones" at very low price, then I buy one of them. don't care!

EVGA have good customer service, so one can turn a blind eye, so to speak. ;)

I changed the title as what they did is actually worse.  The source for the story called it a manufacturing defect when it actually is EVGA trying to just make more money at the expense of giving customers the card they deserve.

When Asus screws up the R9 290 and 290X nobody bats an eye, but when EVGA has the cooler on a slight offset position, everyone loses their minds.

I never heard about that story can you give me a link to the article because i am thinking of getting a asus strix 970

From what benchmarks I've seen they still perform just as good as other variants, doesn't really seems like that big of a deal to be honest though.

I hate it when companies rush a high end product.

If it's a high end top tier product it should have a lot of effort put into it

Well, shit! I was going to buy one next month with the ACX 1.0 cooler since it's going to get a block from EK and I have been thinking about a custom loop for a while. The MSI is not likely to get a waterblock and the Asus Strix that is basically a DCUII cooler is about 60 euro more expensive here in Italy compared to the ACX 1.0 on caseking.

Could it jus be a case that this was the best they could come up with? Something they already had was better than what they could give, also I'm a bit dubious when it comes to heatpipes being as helpful as they are.

Regardless for the difference in heat temps it doesn't bother me and wouldn't stop me from buying it, I'd either watercool it and it wouldn't matter or increase the fan speed a little on the air cooler

Oh wow, I had not seen that. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, it's even more ridiculous considering the Hawaii cards need all the cooling they can get and it is the exact opposite situation for the GM204 cards.

Asus used the cooler from the 780(ti) for Hawaii which is a much smaller chip and in turn not all the heatpipes made direct contact with the die. VRM cooling was also an issue.

You don't care that they tried to cheap out?

EVGA Engineers be like:

"Either we have hours and hours of work desinging a new heatsink, making it perfect for the new maxwell PCB layout but spending tons of money or we just take the old one and sacrifice 2°C. #yolo"

And because i'm an engineer myself, shave time and shave money!
