LG Wine Smart Flip Phone With Android 4.4 KitKat, Safe Keeper Launched

LG announced their first smart flip phone called "Wine Smart" in Korea, which I think maybe a direct descent from their Wine flip phone line. LG is not the first one to release a smart flip phone, as Samsung has already released several version of their smart flip phones in China (like  SM-G9098, W789, W2014 and the Galaxy Golden). But instead of following Samsung, making the flip phone ridiculously expensive, this flip phone may not be that expensive, as it will be promoted as a mid-tier offering in Korea, and it is targeted for elderly.

Let's talk about specs first. The LG Wine Smart (LG-F480) features:

-a single 3.5-inch IPS touchscreen with a resolution of 320x480 (HVGA)
-Android 4.4 KitKat with the company's UX skin
-powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor (unspecified chipset)
-1GB of ram , 4GB of inbuilt storage onboard, with expandable storage support (unspecified maximum storage limit) via microSD card
- an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and a 0.3-megapixel front camera
-1700mAh removable battery
-supports LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Micro-USB and FM radio
-physical dimension: 118.6x59.4x16.9mm

Besides the mid to low end specs, the phone features physical key buttons,  with a dedicated physical button for launching Kakao Talk, an instant messaging service in Korea. This phone also features an interesting function called "Safe Keeper", which according to Android Community's article,

There is a "Safe Keeper" function that will automatically send out an emergency notification, along with necessary information like the phone's location, to pre-defined numbers in case the smartphone is unused for a set period of time, which could be an indication that something is not right.

The price and availability of this phone has not yet been announced. Personally I may buy this phone as my backup phone if it is available in my area, as I love flip phones, but Samsung's smart flip phones are ridiculously expensive.

I want it just for the physical keyboard! That's a huge selling point imo...

My gramps would LOVE it, he's got double vision (still a bit after getting special glasses) and says it's hard to type on his iPhone because of the lack of haptic feedback. He wants a phone with a keypad that he can also use with WiFi and this'd all he needs!

You thought flip phones were gone? Hah, that's cute, and LG agrees with you. Today LG has introduced the LG Wine Smart, which sports a 3.5" 480x320 display, quad-core CPU (unspecified), 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage (expandable), an 8MP camera, and a 1,700mAh battery

It's unclear how long that battery will last or what kind of operating the system is running. As for the battery, it can potentially last longer than modern day smartphones despite having a small battery, but more than likely won't last as long as the flip phones of old. Many things can be factored into this, such as the small screen resolution, operating system, processor, etc. As for the operating system, it looks like it's running some sort of version of Android - assumably 4.4 KikKat - but it also could be a custom LG operating system. If the phone is using Android, I think the battery life will like a modern day smartphone, but we shall see.

LG is considering an overseas release, but for now the phone will stay in South Korea. If you think LG releasing a flip phone in 2014 is odd, well, it is, but do keep in mind that some Asian countries, such as South Korea and Japan, the flip phone is still alive and well, and being actively used. So is the LG Wine Smart the first modern day flip phone to be released? Nope. Just last year Samsung announced a modern day flip phone of its own. Personally, I would be open to using one of these modern day flip phones, but they would really have to see me on using one. I love my smartphone a little bit too much.

What are your thoughts on LG's latest phone, and would you be open to using it?

all the cool phones are stuck in Asian countries :(

Could import it, but then there's the language barrier, unless the UI is in English, but I doubt that...

Yep, if that wasn't an issue id buy that Samsung one long time ago.

samsung-flip_2644696b.jpg

yes...a SAMSUNG phone......... i dont even like there stuff.

That's actually a genius design. It's still a flip phone, but you can use it like a regular smartphone. What would be even better is if there was a screen on the other side as well. Either way, I approve!

I'd buy, if the price is lower to suit the lower specs. I've been looking for a decent Android phone with a full query keyboard and I couldn't find one. It's one of the things that makes me cry out for my old Nokia N900. :(

Believe it or not, there's still a market for cheap phones.  A lot people just don't need a smart phone.
