It simulates the folding of proteins. The reason this is useful is that the way many of the signaling proteins in the human body work is very mechanical in nature. If we know what shape these proteins have, drugs can be developed to influence how they work based on that knowledge, rather than trial and error. Now, the shape of a protein is determined by the sequence of its amino-acids, different types of which all interact with each other and the water surrounding it in different ways, folding it from a straight chain at the moment of creation into the functional eventual shape. Simulating this process is the most efficient way to determine that shape, see how different proteins interact with each other and how drugs can influence this interaction. Basically, it helps medicine move forward, faster. The reason you want to run the software is simply for charity. Huge amounts of processing power are required to perform this simulation, and the research centres can't provide all of it. You can help by running f@h.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

Its essentially a way that you can help find cures for diseases, similar to BOINC which can do more than just medicine, such as Physics & Maths simulations.
