Is upgrading worth it?
If your laptop has one SATA port available, which is common enough, then you cannot grab two drives.
A Big SSD would be better, even though some Laptop Sata controllers are commonly stuck with Sata2 still.
This is where hybrid drives shine.
Single port Laptops, if you KNOW FOR SURE your gunna use more than an SSD provides, go Hybrid.
If your SURE that you will always be using less space than the SSD size you choose, then a fully blown SSD is still the better option.
The Hybrid drives for 'consumer' use is perfectly fine. But the 8GB of SSD flash fills quickly unless your only using Windows and a few apps.
If your do heavier than normal tasks, SSD, if normal use.. SSHD
^Again..only recommended if a single SATA port is available to use from your laptop. If you can do multiple, an SSD+HDD is best.
Either way, both selections will be faster in almost all cases VS your internal 5400rpm you currently own.
