Missing 16GB of space on my SSD

Hello good folk of the LTT community!

 

I've run into a rather strange problem today. I decided to clean up a bit and noticed that my SSD (Samsung 840 EVO) had only 13.5GB remaining of the 111.9GB which means I have 98.4GB used. So I went to WinDirStat to check on what was using all that space.

I have only 81.7GB used which means that I should have 30.2GB of free space, not 13.5. I have already disabled hibernation, adjusted pagefile size to 1-4GB (The 1.0GB in <Files> is the pagefile), disabled indexing, etc. I have also searched via google with site:Linustechtips.com and the threads I found did not help me at all. I am absolutely baffled. Where the hell did 16GB of space run off to?

Edit 1: Already did virus scan, run Ccleaner, run MalwareBytes and uninstalled everything I did not need anymore

you could try booting into linux and see what linux says.

Will get linux dual boot ready but I'd rather keep it in windows. I have 0 experience with linux ':P

Ummm.... This is the OS drive, so maybe it has a secondary partition with "system reserved" space. Go into windows recovery and try to see if the drive is divided.

Planning on trying StarCitizen (Highly recommended)? STAR-NR5P-CJFR is my referal link

Have you check how many Windows restore points you have? Those can quickly add up.

Like @Blade of Grass said, check the Windows Restore points in CCleaner and delete all but the 3 latest (it won't let you delete the very latest).

The drive is not divided. It's a single 111.9GB partition.

It does not, and I already have my page file sorted. 1-4GB on my SSD and system manager (16-32GB) on my 1TB HDD so that's already out of the option. Windirstat also detects the pagefile as I already stated and is listed as 1.0GB so that's definitely not it.

 

Do you have over provisioning enabled in Samsung Magician?

Nope

 

 

Have you check how many Windows restore points you have? Those can quickly add up.

Deleted every point but the latest but that only accounted for 4GB.

I would recommend downloading SpaceSniffer:

Just to verify the findings of WinDirStat. I also prefer the interface of SpaceSniffer - to me it's easier to nail down exactly how much space is being used by what - and it's faster. But these are from my own experiences and could be different for others.

I use JDiskReport to see what's taking up space. I found that if you have hybernate enabled it creates a sys file on the root of C.

In my case, that one file was over 30GB because of my amount of Ram.

I already stated that I disabled hibernation which deletes the file completely. Also it is a file that is detected by WindirStat and it is not being detected now.
