Brand New Budget Build Help

Hi guys I am building a new gaming rig for bf4 and other games. I intend to run only games at 1080p but high frame rates and max settings.

I am buying the things off amazon, it would be great to hear your opinions.

My budget is around 1450 usd for all the parts.

Here are the list of components:

CPU: FX-8350 Black Edition 8 cores

GPU: 2 of EVGA GTX 970 ACX 1.0 Superclocked 4GB DDR5 running SLI

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990 FXA-UD3 ATX

HDD: 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 6GB/S

CPU heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

Fans: 3 Bitfenix Spectre Pro

Ram: ADATA USA XPG 1.0 OC series (2 of 4GB)

PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 900W

Case: Bitfenix prodigy pro

Nope... I'm pretty sure that CPU will bottle neck your GPU. And at max setting with 1 GTX 970 on 1080p you should be able to get 60+ fps in most game already

Also, that PSU is overkill even when you do SLI, and I highly doubt that that case can house 2 card in SLI with the 212 EVO as well. Also, no SSD at this price range is a crime :3

So this instead

The bitfenix Prodigy can house 2 cards in sli and a cooler master. Look at youtube, Linus completed a build like this.

Nope~ 1 Titan Z is about 3000$... and it wont perform as well as 2 970 SLI... they are not mean for consumer/gamer, it's more for the graphical designer so that's why it's so expensive with features that dont contributed in anyway for gaming

Do you mean this build?

That's a BitFenix Phenom M, not a Prodigy. Also yes, it's possible to house 2 card in SLI in the Prodigy, they usually dont use a Hyper 212 EVO in that same build and use some AIO Water Cooler instead, because the air inside the case is very limited so if you use an EVO as well the hot air will be blow inside the case alot. With an AIO directed out the CPU heat will go out right away and the GPU's heat will follow that airflow as well

Oh i know so why would the amd cpu bottleneck the gpu. In the Tech of Tomorrow video, he said that amd is fine for gaming and internte surfing. I would like to try the amd cpu and save myself some money. The i7 processor is made for more cpu intensive work such as rendering so i would think that the amd cpu would be perfect for gaming.

Ya and they did not use a water cooler. They used a be quiet cpu heatsink cooler. They did not add fans on the top of the case. i intend to put two 140mm fans on top and 140mm fan below. With another fan on the side of the case. For a nice flow of intake and exhaust.

I've never suggested an i7 for you, I suggested an i5. FX 8350 is a good CPU, but in term of power the i5 4690k is generally better since it single core performance is better, and in games nowaday that dont really utilized more than 2-4 cores at all, having a stronger single core is better. I know that the FX 8350 will do fine for gaming/internet surfing etc, but since it's lower in performance compare to an i5 I usually only use it for build that's <1000$, starting from 1000$ up an i5 is justifiable.

As for the case... if you want to then I wont stop you~

I second this. Don't bother with an AMD CPU at a $1450 budget. The i5 is amazing, I have the same one and it works miracles. Really can't go wrong with an Intel i5.

A Custom watercooling loop will set you back at least $300, you could watercool if you want to ditch the second 970. go for a Corsair H110i for your CPU if you want to cool it AIO style. As for GPU I'd recommend a NZXT G10 paired with a Corsair H60 (or similar).

If you are going to overclock, yes. Also your need to either be experienced in building watercooler cloop or get someone good to build for you so there's no leak or stuff that coul potentially destroy your computer.

If you are not going to overclock, no. A stock cooler may be just a slightly worse compare to a water cooler if you dont overclock, so dont even bother with it, not to mention watercooler loop cost alot too, even if it's DIY

Okay so i5 it is, but i really could buy a titan z instead of those dual evga gtx 970s

Titan Z: $2,999

2x GTX 790: $678

You could buy 9 GTX 970s for the price of a Titan Z.

Read my previous post. Also Titan Z may not bring you as much fps as 2 GTX 970~

Rather go for the Single 980 instead of two 970s. it doesn't scale perfectly (2x 970s don't give double the performance of a 970), and you could always upgrade and add another 980 in a couple months time if you wanted more FPS. Rather use the extra $110 on games or a Mechanical Keyboard/Monitor.

Also, if BF4 is your only game you plan on playing and it matters more than anything else maybe look more at a R9 280x as its about the same price as a 970 and it plays better in Battlefield 4 (it still plays just as good in most other games too though).

I disagree with this though. The 970 trade blows with the 780, while the 980 do with the 780Ti, so the performance gain from a single 970 to a single 980 isnt all that great, 2 970 would dominated 1 980 for sure, but ofc we have the problem with some games dont support SLI and some other stuff. And there's no way an R9 280x can compare with a 970, since like I said a 970 is about the same as a 780, and 780 dominated 280x

I mean't 280x and 770, sorry. And yes I was referring to the SLI support issues among others (problems with some PSUs etc).

I'm a fan of the Asus STRIX cards, I think they're beautiful. Ofcourse the EVGA one is nice too. I don't really like MSI.
