Just how many fans do I need to keep a system cool?

I always recommend filling up your fan slots, you have slots for a reason.

For your build though, 3 should be enough - 1 intake and 1 exhaust, and one extra for either intake or exhaust. Just make sure there is some good airflow going to your CPU and graphics card.

My case is (going to be) a Thermaltake Versa G2 that comes with a 120mm fan on the rear. It has support for 5 more 120mm fans so I'd like to know just how many fans do I need for adequate cooling?

My build just in case you need it:

Case: Thermaltake Versa G2

CPU: Intel Core i5 4590 3.3GHz

Motherboard: Asus B85-PRO GAMER

RAM: G.Skill DDR3 1600 CL 9 (8GB Kit) 4GB x 2 [Ripjaws-X]

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA3

Graphics card: Asus Geforce GTX760 2GB

PSU: Seasonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W

OS: Windows 8.1

is happy.

Whatever comes with the case will work, but I would add 1 more intake fan.

CPU: FX-6300 @ 4.4 ghz GPU: MSI 7950 Motherboard: Asrock 970 Extreme R2  RAM: Teamgroup Elite Black 8GB 1600mhz

Case: Corsair 300r Windowed Storage: 60GB Corsair SSD boot, 1TB WD Black storage PSU: Corsair GS600 Displays: AOC 22", Acer 24" both 1920x1080 60hz

Cooling: Coolermaster V8 cpu cooler Keyboard: QPAD MK50 Cherry MX Blue Mouse: Logitech G500s  Mouse Pad: Corsair MM400 Sound: Sennheiser G4ME ONE headset, Audio Technica ATH M50s

Depends on the components you have and the climate you live in, monitor your temperatures and find yourself a noise/temp sweet spot.

Fill them all with decent fans. Linus did a video saying premium fans aren't really worth it a while back. Make sure you have equal intake and exhaust to help with dust.

Front= intake

Top/ back= exhaust

Bottom= either

Sides= intake

I have another question - if I were to install 5 fans, would noise be an issue? I'm planning to use Cooler Master Blue LED 120mm silent fans.

is happy.
