Technology things your school does wrong

Dude

Hey guys,

In case you ask; this does take some inspiration from my favourite thread of all time (Experiences with Non-Techies) but the key difference is that the other thread is about people's hilarious stories of people who don't know shit about technology. This is about the things that schools do wrong with the technology they have.

My school does a lot of shit wrong...

For starters, the desktops that are designed for xp are running a pirated version of Windows 7 Enterprise. That's pretty dense.

Another thing they do is that they refuse to maintain the computers properly! I once picked up a paperclip, scraped the front of the case and found a fucking huge dust bunny... I complain because that will eventually become a goddamn fire hazard and still, fuck-diddly-all is done.

Lastly, they pour money in to really shitty laptops and networks for the students to use in some lessons. But what happens is that the laptops are always broken in one way or another - I have encountered keyboards with missing keys, broken network cards and jammed disk drives. They are so broken that some of the staff bring in their own laptops...

Does your school do anything like that?

My college has something dumb, but it's not as dumb as your school.

The district won't put any more money into our network, so sometimes our school network gets overcrowded on peak hours and I can't even take a test. This happens all the freaking time and it's irritating.

sometimes the network just goes down completely and we won't be able to have class at all in the classes that require a connection.

Same here. At least everyone which I haven't put a sticky note on them instructing them to not be used because the power supply sounds "unnatural" and is crackling and popping.

In the first week of school (this year) my school had no network, so we couldn't work on the PC's. I'm doing an IT study. Also, all laptops miss lots of keys (Usually don't work on those things, but sometimes have to)

My school network is 5 GHz. Only 5 GHz, so if your phone/tablet/laptop is too cheap/old to support 5 GHz, well then F**k you.

My TAFE manages to one up that tough. PCs there work fine, but if you need to use macs in your class, you need to log into a deep freeze version of OS X, so you can do all your work but if it crashes or you forget to save your stuff to the student drive, too bad you just lost everything on your hard drive. Also, there is no protection on your files on the network, every folder is accessible by "student", the only account on the network.

This year at my school they have these Pentium computers connected to 4:3 monitors CONNECTED BY VGA (no matter what computer it is, or if it's for students or teachers) that are just being switched out. They're designed for 8.1 because of that little sticker but they all run 7 and some of them aren't activated so they could be pirated... They block a lot of shit, including the start task manager, but a lot of the BIOSs aren't and people do things most annoying to me is turning off one of the cores and turning the game up mad loud...

On another, slightly unrelated note, if I were to install Ubuntu on a flash drive; could I bypass school filters and therefore get shit done properly?

They expect us in our Graphic Communications class to render with an old ass intel dual core and 512mb of RAM. Let's just say it takes a goddamn long time. We also run Windows XP which is slow. We aren't allowed to bring in our own equipment (Computers, laptops), neither are the teachers. And about 65% of the school's computers have a very, very annoying coil whine

The uni im at is using windows 7 dell inspirons. 5000 series i think.

It takes them (And i shit ye not) 30 minutes to boot.. And all they have on them is completely clean windows installs.

I think they are running off a server in the school (Since im not sure that having 400+ accounts on the actual laptops is possible.. if anything it would be idiotic)

But still.. 30 minutes to boot is not ok. That's 1/4 of class gone!

It did not bother me before since i had a laptop running fedora. (Damn near instant boot) But ever since it died im having to use the schools computers....

I can't stand slow things..

If you don't uninstall it, wouldn't they know something's up? And it might be the network that has the filters...

Consider Chrome's power hogging and the resources that the school computers actually have, Chrome is a stupid idea.

I actually asked my schools tech if i could do it.. He wanted to do it too but the school had told him that that wasn't ok.

He spent two days installing chrome on all the laptops though xD

Well hardware wise, my college is fairly well off. All the desktops are running I7-3770's (the ones in the 3D Modeling room also have Quadros) ((though my major is software development..... so they do kind of know....))
But a few of the older teachers don't know to much about newer hardware, a student asked whats the difference between an I7 , I5, and I3... dude says the that's the number of cores the CPU has........ I corrected him in the middle of class, though he seemed to encourage that behavior.

Then it doesn't sound like a bad idea... I'd use a virtual box so they don't know something's up though
