i5k or 17k

James David

I've been wondering if it is worth upgrading from my Intel i5k to an Intel i7k. I've noticed some newer games that are coming out have the recommended requirements stating you need i7.

If I didn't have to upgrade, obviously I'd prefer not to.

No game needs an I7 as of yet. When games really start to use more than 4 threads only then should you get an I7 for gaming. For now your I5 will do just fine

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Games won't NEED an i7 for a while. However they certainly will benefit from them. I doubt it's something you should bother with right now though, the CPU you have is good.

You don't need an i7 for gaming. And i can surely say that you wont be needing it in the next 1-2 years as well. i5 is pretty much as good as an i7 in gaming so just stop thinking about it and enjoy the gaming on i5.

If you really want it, sell the i5 and buy the i7.

Think it would be kinda pointless to upgrade now unless you are going to use the hyper-threading to its full potential.

Hyperthreading is only useful for video editing purposes. If your computer is mainly going to be a gaming pc than the 4690k is a great choice along with the gtx 780.

as everyone will re-iterate. i5's are the best choice for gamers.
