Advice Needed

Rye Cribby Tree

My WD black has been giving me some problems with slow access speeds and weird drive utilization so I'm in the market for a new storage solution. Now with this in mind I can see going one of two ways, buying an SSHD to migrate my OS to from the slow drive and using both as storage for my steam library; Or I could get an SSD to put my OS on and keep my games or other less frequently used programs on my hard drive. I've picked out an SSHD http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop-Solid-Hybrid-ST1000DX001/dp/B00EIQTOFY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1411157673&sr=8-2&keywords=seagate+sshd but I'd like to know what you guys think about just using an SSD boot drive.

SSD boot drives are the way to go. An SSHD just isn't as good (Fast).

I'm not a big fan of SSHD. SSD + HDD is the way to go. Usually 120/128gb or 240/256gb on the ssd then either 1 or 2TB on the HDD

Get a SSD/HHD SEPARATELY!  Never get a SSHD, it's not worth it.

Because he had a hard drive.

SSHDs = 2 points of failure, if the SSD fails then you're fucked, if the HDD fails, you're fucked.

Get an SSD and a separate HDD.

run a S.M.A.R.T  diagnostics tool to check your current HDD. I would never recommend keeping any data on a drive that is showing signs of failure, you should backup all your data ASAP and get a SSD+HDD. I don't recommend SSHDs, they are much slower than a real SSD and you usually only get a few gigabytes worth of SSD storage on them.

Alright, so the general consensus is an SSD boot drive now comes the question of how much storage do I realistically need for something that will only have my OS and one or two programs on it. I found a 240 gig in my price range but it's a pny SSD.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178720&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= Should I get a better ssd at a lower capacity?

I ran the error scan on HD tune and it didn't have any errors.

Hey there,

I would back up the guys and also say separate SSD and HDD seems better in terms of speed, redundancy and reliability.

It is strange that HD Tune does not show anything and you are still experiencing slow access speeds. You could try the quick and extended tests of WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics and check the logs if there is any problem with bad sectors or the S.M.A.R.T. condition of the drive. WD Blacks usually have 5 year warranty so if there is any problem with the drive, I would check if a RMA is possible.

In what ways are you experiencing drops in speed? Could you post any screenshots or share some info?

Hope this helps,

Captain_WD.

I think I figured it out, my mobo was set to IDE instead of AHCI but I did make a thread on this in case you'd like to take a look at what problem I was having. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/217104-crazy-harddrive/

I'll give it a look, thanks :)
Glad to see you've got that solved!
